As I understand it, only Ron R. can fire him because Sessions has recused himself. So does lap dog Sessions fire Ron R. and then appoint someone else who will fire Mueller? Is there any other way that Trump can get this done?

(13,885 posts)I guess he could. That would be quick and deadly. I had over complicated things. So watch what Trump says in New Hampshire today...he'll test the crowd. If he get a lot of wild cheering, he'll do it.

(26,257 posts)Seems to me that isn't a position he could just plop a minion into, without first having to pass congressional approval. And that would eat up time when Mueller might just be able to start dropping bombs.

they can quietly vet the nominee informally before any official announcement and then ram it through quickly.

(7,947 posts)like another cabinet member, as "Acting AG", I don't think he needs to do another confirmation. This is what Pruitt is supposedly hoping for.
It's also why Trump just keeps shuffling the cabinet rather than appointing someone new to these suddenly open positions. If he puts whojamajigger from CIA in at State, no problem! No new confirmation hearing where they could conceivably be asked something that could end up being a "perjury trap".
I don't know how long you can go as an "acting".

(52,181 posts)The Federal Vacancies Reform Act of 1998 is a United States law that requires the executive branch departments and agencies to report to Congress and Government Accountability Office (GAO) information about the temporary filling of vacant executive agency positions that require presidential appointment with Senate confirmation. The act requires the Comptroller General report to specified congressional committees, the president, and the Office of Personnel Management if an acting officer is determined to be serving longer than the 210 days (including applicable exceptions established by the act)
