Costco among retailers asking Trump not to implement sweeping tariffs
A group of major national retailers, including Issaquah-based Costco Wholesale, sent a letter to President Donald Trump Monday to express concerns about his plan for broadly applied tariffs on imported goods from China.
The Trump Administration has indicated it will consider widespread tariffs on consumer goods, such as electronics, apparel, footwear and home goods because of China's unfair intellectual property and investment practices.
The letter was signed by Costco and 23 other retailers, including Dollar Tree, Target and Walmart, that represent $1.5 trillion in annual sales and tens of million of American jobs.
"We support holding our trading partners accountable and using targeted trade remedies against intellectual property theft, illegal dumping or subsidies, and other proven trade violations," the group wrote. "At the same time...were this investigation to result in a broadly applied tariff remedy on imports from China, it would hurt American households with higher prices and exacerbate a U.S. tariff system that is already stacked against working families."
