Call him Sir Ringo now, or Sir Richard, to be more precise. Either way, its a fitting honor for the former Beatles drummer, who has waited decades for the recognition.
The 77-year-old Ringo Starr received his long-awaited knighthood from Prince William on Tuesday. He used his real name, Richard Starkey, for the big event.
He said the honor means a lot. It comes more than half a century after the youthful Beatles first went to Buckingham Palace to receive MBE awards.
The other surviving Beatle, Paul McCartney, was knighted in 1997.
I had dinner with him last week and we were both actually laughing about where we came from, and weve ended up in the palace and its now Sir Paul and Sir Richard, said Starr.

(8,045 posts)who developed truly unique styles of playing: just for instance--
Jimi Hendrix
Paul McCartney (two lefties in one group of four, interesting in itself)
Albert King
and so on.
Albert King, like Ringo, played a right handed instrument--turning his guitar upside down so that the high E was at the top, low E on the bottom. His riffs, like Ringo's fills, are instantly recognizable, and though they might sound simple are quite difficult for other musicians to mimic.
Anyway, congratulations to Sir Richard.

(36,416 posts)but this West Coaster was heavy into surf music before the Beatles ever splashed.
And speaking of surf music, Beach Boys drummer, Dennis Wilson was a lefty and played a right hand drum kit, but compensated by playing open-handed drumming.
But what's weird is Micky Dolenz (He really DID learn to play the drums, mentored by Earl Palmer and Hal Blaine) was a natural righty but was forced to learn to play a left hand drum kit because his right foot was to weak to play the bass drum from a childhood disease/injury.
