I ask because the doc confirmed that there are 2 types of flu going around, when I saw her in late Feb.,and darned if we did not get those a week apart...horrible coughing, congestion, but no tummy distress. ) she also said she never seen 2 strains hit, one right after the other, before)
Then we got better after 3 days.
Monday I left the house, went to clinic for a blood draw, and the next am woke up with fever, 6 lovely hours of constant dry heaves, and total limpness. Lots of sleepiness, even after the tummy bit had stopped.
Not asking for advice, just for info. about this set of symptoms .....anyone?

(6,843 posts)And it's a dangerous misnomer. So many people actually be think influenza has something to do with your stomach. Influenza is coughing and high fever as well as aches. You may vomit, but normally not. It killed more people in the world than any other cause yearly until antibiotics were invented

(12,640 posts)Not a flu per say, but it's a nasty 24 - 48 hours of sleeplessness, cold sweats, and dual exit gastro distress. Not to mention feeling both exhausted and on edge.
Spouse had it over Sunday night/Monday. It was so bad, I was concerned it was could be something more serious (as in, cardiac arrest serious) and we went to urgent care to make sure it wasn't anything else.

(39,343 posts)I thought I had a damn stomach tumor or norovirus. I seriously thought I was going to die for a day there. I couldn't/didn't eat for six days.

(36,744 posts)I had it twice this year. Either two strains or the one strain took a second whack at me. People on acid reducing medicines are particularly susceptible to norovirus, as there is less stomach acid to kill the virus. That would be me.

(115,677 posts)Upper respiratory infections. Sore throat, runny nose, chest congestion and sleepiness which is driving me nuts. I can concentrate long enough to read a couple sentences on a book, then nap for 45 min.
Dry heaves sounds more like a norovirus. Make sure you stay hydrated, not just with water. Noroviruses are very contagious but pass quickly, no pun intended.

(12,051 posts)Z-pac -- she was sure it had become, or was becoming, a bacterial sinus infection. She was right; in 3 days I was feeling almost back to normal.

(8,197 posts)Not sure if it's a bad cold or a mild flu. Lots of congestion and my lungs are burning from coughing so much, but my fever hasn't gone above 101.
I know a few other people here in my neck of Connecticut who've had it. They say it lingers but never gets real bad.

(60,010 posts)And some congestion. Had to buy cough suppressants, which were worth the money.
Then we got better for a couple of days, and damned if it did not start again.
Took a week total to feel better.

I got mine at Walmart for about $5.50 :

I know we had to resort to rather pricey but very effective anti-cough stuff earlier this year.

(54,302 posts)Never seen such a sever flu season as this one. Fatalities almost every week, never seen anything like it here.
My wife had it, and it turned into pneumonia. She was in bed for a week. Her 90 year old mom got it, too, and had to be hospitalized. I heard that vaccinations were far less effective this time than previously. I usually don't get vaccinated, but my doc in Dallas pleaded with me to do it this time, so I did. Two very heavy shots, one in each shoulder. They ached for a week after, but so far, I've been spared.

(36,744 posts)This one is called the Aussie flu. It came out of Australia during their last winter, or our summer. There wasnt time for them to develop a vaccine for it, as Ive understood.

(54,302 posts)I may have not gotten it anyway, but with my wife two inches from me the whole time, it's kind of surprising I didn't get it too.

(12,640 posts)So far this year, I've already been exposed between half of my co-workers coming down with the flu hard, and caring for family members who have either caught the major flu virus or the secondary ones; other than my typical December seasonal cold, I haven't gotten sick, despite not getting the shot. And I've been under some serious stress with work and family drama over the past few months, so I should have come down with it.
A couple epidemiologists in the area have a hypothesis that those who had been infected with the flu during one of the past serious influenza outbreaks ( like the SARS or Hong Kong)may be immune to this one, similar to an influenza immunity noticed in those who had survived the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1917/1918.
You might have become immune due to surviving an earlier version of the virus.

(33,059 posts)Several years ago and just prior to when H1N1 hit the headlines, I had a flu which was one of the worst I've experienced in my life. To the point I consulted with my Dr on how to reduce my dangerously high fever and using a combination of strong OTC analgesics and cold showers I was able to do. Then, nobody around me was also ill and I took great precautions to insure nobody caught that monstrosity from me. This year, though, nothing. Even when I felt like a lone survivor in an apocalyptic disease story and everyone around me was hideously sick.
I did get a relatively minor cold for a couple of days and that was so slight my only symptoms were sneezing and swollen glands.
So, I think you're correct in saying this flu is closely related to something which has already gone around or I've had a shot for.

(65,165 posts)But I did just get over an annoying cold. That cold was the first one I have had in 2 years. I wonder if the weather brought them out. Hope you feel better soon!

(60,010 posts)the ironic thing is that I am, by choice, pretty much at home all the time.
Except Monday to go to hospital for a blood draw.
That was it. Only place in a month I have been to.
and by Monday night I was feeling sick
better, tho, tonight....thank you. .
