It wasn't just potential Trump supporters.

It was potential Clinton supporters too. They were poisoning the water to make everyone feel that Clinton was unsuitable. It had the goal of depressing turnout and encouraging third party voters.

I would say the biggest impact was on independents and potential cross over voters. In a sane world, independents and moderate conservatives would have considered a solid Democrat over the insanity of Trump. However, they were fed a constant stream of bs such that they thought "both sides" were terrible.

- "Oh, this guy has high anxiety levels. Send him a message about how dangerous this world is based on some recent brutal crimes, tell him that he needs a gun to protect himself, and that only Trump allows him to own a gun while Hillary will take the guns away!"
- "Oh, this guy loves hunting. Send him a message about…"
- "Oh, there's an evangelical. Tell him Trump is like Jesus and Hillary is satan!"
- "Oh, here's a gay guy. Tell him about the homophobic hate crime from 3 weeks ago, and how the mooslems are coming for him, and only Trump can protect him!"
- "Damn, that's a somewhat educated lefty. He would never vote for trump. Tell him that Bernie Sanders shares his political beliefs, and Hillary is just a corporate shill!"
- "Hey, this guy loves conspiracy theories. Tell him about pizza gate so he can tell all his conspiracy loving friends!"
etc.etc.

Not sure if I get all the details right, but the idea should be the same.
