One for the big square, 16 little squares, 8 tiny squares, 2 squares containing 4 tiny squares each, and then 9 2 by 2 squares (3 per row). that totals 36

Edit to enumerate the squares.

Consider the square to be four units on a side.

4x4 squares - 1
3x3 squares - 4
2x2 squares - 9
1x1 squares - 18 (16 in the 4x4 and 2 extras inside the grid)
half-size squares - 8

1 + 4 + 9 + 18 + 8 = 40

...so I have to consciously be very methodical. It comes from all my many years as a computer programmer and learning how to not miss things I would miss if I weren't being so artificially methodical.

9. 40 is the correct answer

16- 1x1
9- 2x2
4- 3x3
1- 1x1

...are 30

plus 10 due to the two "odd" sqares added in.

So, yes, 40.

I counted 31, and saw what others posted, and after 17minutes or so, came to 40. The ones that were hard to me were the bigger squares, of 3x3's....

Marty, your not thinking 4th dimensionally!!
