Sure some people saw the video tape, but it wasn't talked about that much. The still photos published around the same time in Penthouse got some attention.

But "viral"? No, no one remembers that going "viral."

I was using the Internet in 1994. I was also using CompuServe and GEnie at the same time. YouTube isn't the only way videos have been distributed online, by any means. Viral just means that word of something and how to access that something spread rapidly online. That video did just that. It appeared first on porn websites. They existed in 1994. Then, it started showing up pretty much everywhere files could be downloaded.

For the time period, it most certainly went viral. It's just that there weren't as many people using the system at that time. I launched my first business website in 1994. I also operated a popular BBS system, and had been for years. Nobody who heard of that video had any trouble viewing it if they wanted to.

People were online before the Internet became what it has become today. Lots of people. Viral means today that more people are involved. That's all.
