Doesn’t come up much but women suffer disproportionally from deregulation in jobs, medicine, child issues, and so many other things.

Frances Perkins witnessed the tragedy and it impacted her work on labor issues, notably as FDR's New Deal Labor Secy.

subjected to unsafe working conditions.

Then the fire, and they let them burn.

May they rest in peace, and may all who read this thank the unions, because any decent conditions - the 8-hour day, OSHA, workers comp, health and dental care, the surety that you will get paid for hours worked - all these are benefits that honest workers like you and me fought, bled and sometimes died for.

Remember - the fiduciary responsibility of a CEO in a publicly held company is ONLY to increase earnings for shareholders, and any corners they can cut with labor costs, THEY WILL.

This is why we need collective bargaining. This is why we need strong unions.

We share a last name....though it is and was a fairly common one.

My grandparents lived and worked in the garment district at the time after leaving Russia in 1903.

A visit to the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side is pretty powerful. Grab a sandwich at Katz's (I'll have what she's having) Deli!

(a long time ago, suffice to say!) I have never been able to get over the image of the victims desperately beating on the doors to escape as the fire and smoke were coming right at them, doors that were locked from the outside by the owners and managers to "prevent theft". Their jumping from windows and the roof to escape the fiery flames and choking smoke is another image I can never get out of my mind. The ONLY good thing that came out of it was the changes in policies and laws. And even those had to be fought hard for, a fight which now continues because greed and stomping on the necks of workers and the poor NEVER changes or goes away.

There were also the Radium Girls, poisoned and dying tragically, many slowly, painfully.

Workplace safety and health regulations were fought over these young lives and premature deaths. For good reason.

Thanks for reminding us.

Sad that the same history must be constantly relearned and re-experienced by uninformed citizens.
