KM has to be f'ing oblivious to sign onto the NRA line. The NRA is as much a white supremacist group as the Aryan Nation. Attack the shit out of him for that. I agree with that.

What I am talking about is a bunch of predominantly white folks talking about gestures they don't know the first thing about to support what is ultimately a bullshit argument that Sanders is weak on gun control. It's not just the argument that is bullshit, though. It's hearing white folks who supposedly want us to enthusiastically support the party talking that same "Look at those g*********s flashing gun signs" crap that we have to listen to from the Jeff Sessions of the world.

Mar 2018

The group, Run the Jewels, refers to the hand gesture as a fist and gun.

Since that is the performer in the picture, and the gestures come from their album, there is little but wishful thinking or purposeful misdirection in your chastising the poster for his reference to a gun gesture.

Are you unaware of the term "run the jewels" and the context for the album cover that is being copied in the photo op.

I don't care if Bernie wants to try to up his street cred by mimicking the album cover. I care about his voting and financial supporters. But to say that he was just saying "that's my man" is to be oblivious (on purpose or not) to the album and the artist involved.

Tue Mar 27, 2018, 02:21 PM
Mar 2018

Tell me, when you see a hammer and a sickle, do you say, "That's the symbol for the intersection between agricultural and industrial labor" (which it technically is) or do you say "That's the symbol for Communism?"

But you want folks to believe that someone who claims that a gesture (which is known to us to say "RtJ" ) is about "guns" OR "fists" isn't saying "Well that what it means in the 'burbs" at the same time and about a hundred times louder?

You can run that spin cycle over and over again, but when you open up the lid it's still going to be the hot wash, hot rinse, chlorine bleach load.

Mar 2018

I asked for you to reference your interpretation of the sign. You replied in a thread that (post #4) said the sign Bernie was using was not a gun sign but as a sign for "that's my man". Discussion followed. Then you began accusing those participating as being insensitive and talking about white folks not understanding what the "in" things mean. So I researched. I did not use any urban dictionary site. I mostly referenced several articles and interviews with El-P where he indicated that the cover to that album displayed a sign for a gun and a fist. In other articles about the creation of the album art, the artist, Nick Gazin, concurred.

So I asked you to reference a different interpretation. Perhaps you misread the thread. Perhaps you are just looking for justification for perceived bias where it does not exist. You do not help with the problem by assigning blame where it does not belong. There are obvious and serious problems with relations and the issues of privilege and oppression. Getting testy and tacky on a web site that seeks, with varying levels of success, to address those problems is counterproductive.

The issue was not "white people" saying that things about what other people mean or don't mean. The thread referenced the gesture that Bernie was doing. One said it was the sign for "that's my man". Others indicated that it was the sign for a gun. Yes. They were imitating the cover art that has come to signify "Run the Jewels". But my research indicated that the group and the artist said those signs were for a gun and a fist. Then I asked you if you had a reference to any other interpretation. You took that as a chance to run a rant that has nothing to do with the posts in this thread.

Most, even the links to the group itself, refer to the gesture as a gun and a fist. Most reference it, like the name of the group, as someone being robbed.

If you search for hand gesture for "that's my man", you get a dozen different poses, usually with a thumb pointing or with a straight index finger pointing away (famous meme with Obama.)

Where did you find your "that's my man" interpretation?

And I'm sure the next time it comes up that some red state Democrat who has actual power and influence and is against gun control of some kind that many of these same folks "outraged" about this are going to tell those of us who have an issue with it to shut the hell up and get in line because "it's the best we can do!!!" or whatever the excuse du jour is.

For the record I find his opinion on this idiotic, as I do Sarandon's on most anything. But the level of scapegoating and overinflated sense of influence this place gives folks like them is just absurd on it's face, especially with the excuses made for people with actual power, influence, and....you know....actual votes on legislation.

...1 of those groups (the red state Dems) have actual power and vote on things that affect our lives. They actively vote against things that are in the best interest of the Democratic party.

The other group (Killer Mike and Susan Sarandon) are citizens expressing their opinions.

My point stands. Only on DU is one of those things worthy of defending and the other viewed as some sort of all powerful entity.

That implies he doesn't actually believe what he's saying and is saying or doing something just to get a rise out of someone.

There's no reason to believe that.

And again, he's one individual with one vote and the same right to speak his mind as any other citizen.

If you honestly believe that a red state Democrat in a position of power, voting against gun control is less responsible for the damage wrought on this issue than a mid tier rap artist then we're going to be in this mess for a long time.

By your logic, this guy:

Is less responsible and open for criticism for the scourge of guns in this country than Killer Mike is.

Even if they themselves vote againsr it.

There were many who were promoting killer mike. And even using him to attack john lewis and other black democrats.

And he used the name of a black kid killed to attack the marchers . That kids own mother was a part of that march.

Amazing how one op elevates someone to “one of the most powerful people in the country” to some. I imagine it’s pretty amazing to go through life with such an imagination.

He's not powerful. Neither is Susan sarandon. And the fact that DU thinks either of those people are worthy of ANY posts in general discussion threads shows how absurd many people's thinking can be on here. And the fact that anyone thinks their words had more impact on the 2016 election than many people with D's after their names making bad decisions and bad calls and having bad judgement, only further exemplifies this line of thinking.

Irony must be present for proper sarcasm. The only irony on display is yours. Therefore it is clearly not sarcasm. Just a fallacious argument.

"their words had more impact on the 2016 election than many people with D's after their names making bad decisions and bad calls and having bad judgement, only further exemplifies this line of thinking."

Another fallacy.

As of this post, the name Sarandon has been used seven times and is not in the op. Four of those uses are in your posts.

I apologize if I was mistaken about what the priorities of many on this page were based off of my reading of the many posts on here on a variety of subjects. You've set me straight and from the sound of it if you are telling me I am wrong, then I'm assuming you agree with me.

He still has a cult of personality around him, that's for sure.

I never understood his popularity, I admit. He didn't (and isn't) expressing new ideas. I don't think he's a particularly good speaker, and frankly I think he comes of as kind of a judgemental hypocrite (where are those tax returns, Bernie? WHat are you hiding?).

I just think we'll be better off when he returns to being the gadfly from Vermont. He will not ever be the Democratic party nominee.

Bernie Sanders’ Gun Control Affair: It’s Complicated

By Anhvinh Doanvo

Senator Bernie Sanders, while being a political darling of liberal Democrats, has found himself in a political quagmire on gun control. The Washington Post has featured a story on his cataclysmic rise to Congress with the NRA’s support. He’s taken vitriol from leftist commentators calling him a “gun nut” and praise from conservatives who have received the same label with glee. His votes against the Brady Bill with its waiting periods — legislation that would have mandated background checks on firearm purchases — and other bills flood the headlines of both liberal and conservative publications.

Bernie Sanders’ position on gun control is far more complex than these headlines suggest, however, even if his nuances lack a reasonable basis. Both Sanders’ supporters and detractors need to be aware of these nuances before blindly praising or criticizing his politics. His positions are such that seemingly minor elements in public policy — especially concerning his opposition to nationally legislated waiting periods for firearm purchases — will thwart the politics of both the right and left.

IMO, Killer Mike typifies what Bernie Sanders is about, show with little substance. Hillary Clinton was crushing Bernie among Black voters, so out pops Killer Mike as a way to peel off young Blacks. But Bernie never tried to address the very detailed reasons why Blacks preferred Hillary, he just stayed with his standard Banks and Oligarchs speeches.

Run The Jewels rapper Killer Mike, who’s spoken before about his membership in the NRA and his general pro-firearm views, gave an assertively pro-gun interview to the organization’s media wing, NRA TV, this week. Presumably designed as counter-programming to the March For Our Lives events happening around the world today, the interview sees Killer Mike—who was a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders in the 2016 election—express his discontent with the way white progressives can treat allyship as a one-way street, while pushing the narrative that guns are the only way to keep Americans, and specifically black Americans, safe.

Speaking to NRA TV’s Colion Noir, Killer Mike says, “You can’t continue to be the lackey. You’re a lackey of the progressive movement, because you’ve never disagreed with the people who tell you what to do.” He also expresses his view that, in a world that has only recently come out of the shadow of apartheid and where “the cops don’t come on time,” guns are necessary to keep black families safe..................

Killer Mike cosigning an organization that traffics in threats against the media (including black women), that ignored Philando Castile, and that pushes gun sales through “brown/black scare” videos is his choice. It’s also proof the NRA knows that the teenagers are beating them.

Respectfully, Mike, NRA TV is not the equivalent of MSNBC, or CNN, or CBS, etc. It's not a news network. It's a video outlet for the NRA, designed to push their propaganda, and it's propaganda that is demonstrably hostile to people who look like you and me.

Respectfully Joy, MSNBC, CNN, CBS, etc. Aren't news networks either. They are video outlets for propaganda as well. No one is being objective. You guys are all for gun control and you purposefully suppress all news that doesn't support this narrative. It's painfully transparent.

89. Why KM's embrace of the NRA
Tue Mar 27, 2018, 08:59 AM
Mar 2018

shows he doesn't know shit about black gun ownership and why the response of white liberals show they don't either.

The central premise of the NRA self-protection meme is pure racism. It is that white folks need guns to kill black folks. Trying to spin that meme by saying, "No, no, we want black folks to kill black folks too," doesn't make it any less of a call to kill blacks folks. KM is an idiot for buying that.

On the other hand, acting like black folks have no more need for guns than white folks is the epitome of white privilege. Unlike white folks, when we talk about being under armed assault by the government, we are talking about 400 years of historical reality. We are targeted and gunned down by the government and NO ONE is ever punished for it. The only opportunity most kids growing up where I did to have what white kids can get just by putting out a half ass effort has been intentionally relegated to a criminal sphere where not only is self protection a real concern, even the limited ethic accompanying legitimate business is absent and success is measured in overt displays of control. I'm not saying any of this is good, mind you, but it's something we live with and you don't.

I support banning the ownership and manufacture of all weapons capable of accepting a detachable magazine OR with an internal magazine with a capacity of more than three rounds, however, I am more than a little tired of listening to some folks imposing their suburban sensibilities on people who don't have their privileges.

I am not opposed to guns at all. I just want to see people using guns that are practical for the situation and the owners should not have a history of mental illness or domestic abuse (domestic abuse means regularly beating someone up who don't want that, not getting upset once with your girlfriend in public, losing your shit and grabbing one of her arms, but never doing it again). As far as magazine capacity, IMO, anyone who can't neutralize a threat with no more that six shots should not own a gun at all.
