Now anyone can easily send items to a U.S. refugee familys home, thanks to one womans

‘mama bear instincts’

A year and a half ago, Miry Whitehill got a call from a neighborhood friend who had met a family of recently arrived refugees from Syria. They had a 7-month old and were in search of a jumperoo, a doorway harness that a baby can bounce in.

Whitehill, 32, a Los Angeles resident with a baby of her own, knew plenty of parents who were passing such items around, and it took her about 10 minutes to find one via Facebook. She and a friend delivered the jumperoo and some other baby paraphernalia to the family. Little did she know it would launch her into a new calling.

“I didn’t have a background in refugee resettlement, I didn’t know anything about nonprofits,” said Whitehill, who had been a stay-at-home mother with a background in digital advertising. “It was sort of like a mama bear instinct of wanting this other mom to have the things to take care of herself and her family. And it was a domino effect from there.”

PS. 40 years years ago, I was an Eagle Scout working on a project for Koinia (sic?) which was a group doing similar work for Vietnamese immigrants. I got to see first hand how much donations of household stuff, toys, and toiletries vastly improved the lives of immigrants, especially children.
