Wall Street Journal trashes Trump for thinking he can threaten and lie his way out of Stormy Daniels

TOM BOGGIONI
27 MAR 2018 AT 10:17 ET

In an uncharacteristic attack on Donald Trump, the editorial board of the conservative Wall Street Journal took the president to task saying that his past indiscretions with an adult film star and a Playboy playmate, coupled with the chaos he has sowed in the White House, will lead to him being impeached.

According to the editors, “Every sentient voter in 2016 understood that Donald Trump had a bad history with women. He survived politically because his opponent had spent 20 years denying or apologizing for even worse behavior by her husband. But mistakes of character tend to catch up with everyone, and that’s what is now happening with President Trump and his many women.”

It should be noted that it was the Journal that broke the bombshell story that revealed Trump’s attorney, Michael Cohen, paid adult actress Stormy Daniels — whose real name is Stephanie Clifford — $130,000 a month before the 2016 election as part of an agreement that banned her from publicly discussing an alleged sexual encounter with Trump.

Stating “CBS’s 60 Minutes Sunday still has the potential to harm Mr. Trump. That’s not because of the 2006 hookup or its mockable details,” the Journal asked, ” why did his lawyer Michael Cohen go to such lengths to keep it quiet before Election Day in 2016?”

“It’s impossible to predict how all of this will play out politically. Many Trump partisans will refuse to believe it or claim it’s irrelevant,” the editorial explains. “But our guess is that at the margin this contributes to a growing public belief that Mr. Trump’s personal flaws are undermining his chances for a successful Presidency.”

“Two months ago he had emerged from a tumultuous first year with the triumph of tax reform and rising poll numbers. The strong economy had Republicans closing the gap with Democrats on who should run Congress next year. But Mr. Trump can’t resist promoting White House strife and making himself the center of political tumult,” the editors lamented.

He survived politically because his opponent had spent 20 years denying or apologizing for even worse behavior by her husband.

I am unaware of Bill Clinton claiming to 'grab them by the pussy' and several other disgusting acts by Groepr Don the Con. And yes Bill Clinton was no paragon of virtue.

We can choose to consider them greatly overblown, but the whole Juanita Broderick thing was out there and being blasted nearly 24/7 by the R's.

And yes, he didn't go around bragging about his "conquests" and his "immunity", but it is true that the "20 years" does have some resonance.

Bill Clinton had consensual affairs, but Donald Trump's entire adult life, he has proven to be a vulgar sexist pig. It would be hard to find any behavior towards women that is worse than Trump's.

Or something else. He always promises things, condos etc. How many women took him up on the deal and signed NDAs? So do they owe taxes on undeclared income?

regarding taxes. I wonder.

Signing an NDA is one thing, but I am sure threatening the women could have major legal blow back on Trump and his thug lawyer.

I remember having talks with several Republican friends/acquiantances of mine and brought up how almost all the charges and accusations against Clinton turned out to be BS. Almost always, the response was, "Well, there were so many of the charges that some of them had to be true - where there is smoke there is fire."

(I can remember at least 3 people using that exact analogy - where there is smoke, there is fire.)

about his sexual conquests and treatment of women for far more than 20 years. It was one of his favorite topics on Howard Stern's show. I guess people just expected it from him, part of his very public persona.

They ignore that over 10 women are accusing Trump of unwanted sexual actions. They repeat every unproven, discredited charge against Bill Clinton.

When driving recently, I decided to hear what was being said. Rush Limbaugh - with many loathsome charges against him, actually presented it as:

Trump, before he was President, had sex with many very beautiful women - Playboy models, porn stars. He was a playboy and everyone knew that. (Said with great admiration) All these women were attracted to Trump and he to them. Clinton on the other hand, made unwanted advances etc He then went on to argue that the women were not even exceptionally beautiful.

Obviously, every sentence here contains lies and there was almost a vicarious enjoyment in Trump's conquests and a portrayal of him as charming to women (!)

To me, he seems similar to Rush Limbaugh, gaining a "fan club" of people who are pandered to and told they are smarter, better etc than the elites that they resent. He became their "warrior" or "champion" -- even though, in private, he likely considers them losers and wouldn't give them the time of day.
