3. Theres not much newspapers can do.

As more people read online and physical paper subscriptions drop, profits are plummeting. The only way they can keep their head above water for another day is layoffs.

newspapers wanting me to pay to read content!" Such indignity, but I bet they don't volunteer at their job. Why should journalists? As a creative professional, that attitude drives me crazy. Everyone wants free photos, free graphics, free music, free reading material, and they get so huffy when they can't have it (or the free stuff is utter crap).

15. So I spend around $40/month to read online content - something doesn't work

with this model.

And that $40 doesn't include paid subscriptions to print (New Yorker, New Scientist) that also include online access.

While I love the NYT, Guardian, others - I'm not sure that I get the value from each.

Perhaps what they should be doing is to come up with a universal payment model. Each article is rated at $0.xx, perhaps based on its origin and its supposed worth. I can pay some fixed amount per month that gives me a good discount to read these articles, if I want.

Frankly, the monthly dinging and the auto-renewal will drive me away.

4. Ad money goes to TV and online blogs now
Tue Mar 27, 2018, 06:50 PM
Mar 2018

The newspapers and print journalism are hurting badly.
Ad money pays salaries, and when that goes away people lose their jobs.

Hopefully, at least some of these laid-off people have found work with online blogs.
Others have probably left the industry for good.

5. There are some types of businesses that should be outlawed, IMO

Vulture capitalists (e.g., Bain Capital -- Mitt Romeny)

Private Equity (e.g., Carlyle Group - the Bush Family)

And maybe Hedge funds -- esp if they're going to go behaving like those Vulture Capitalists

10. Fair chance that if the paper was not bought, ALL those people would be gone.

Fair chance it would be closed, bankrupt, shuttered, ceased publication.

There are rarely heroes in these kind of stories, but the real villains are usually not the ones reflexively named.

Gap fired all but one or two of their designers. No plans to replace them except a few entry level positions. That work is also going to China.

And won't pay anything to read newspapers online.

It is no wonder so many are struggling and/or failing.

How exactly is the person writing that content going to pay their bills if people don't think reading it deserves any compensation?
