House GOP Will Push Balanced Budget Amendment

March 28, 2018 at 7:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Playbook: “House Republicans will take up a balanced-budget amendment when they return from recess, several sources tell us. This follows on the heels of their $1.3-trillion budget bill and their massive tax bill.”

“Why do this now? Here’s what we think: It’s almost election season, and it would be helpful if GOP lawmakers could go home and be able to say they voted to support balancing the federal budget, even though they voted boosted discretionary spending by a ton, and have not touched entitlement spending, which, they have said for years, is the driver of U.S. budget deficits.”

"We tried to balance the budget but the Dems wouldn't let us" is all many of them will need to hear.

Right before the election. That would balance the budget, maybe. With all their Russian connections they really don't need to worry about votes anymore. All they seem to need to win anymore is Russian support and money.

We are all Putin's downtrodden and abused citizens, now.

Gotta pay for those tax cuts, parades, golden statues honoring dear leader, trips to Trump properties, flashy shock and awe weapons of war, Trump's wall. Either cut social programs or continue to privatize public lands and resources.

I ain't happening anyhow, so why not get the jump on the GOOPers and introduce it first.

"Balanced Budget" generates a positive feeling in voters. It just does. That's what the GOP is going for with this. We shouldn't let them steal that opportunity.

It's nonsense, of course. It's an impossible goal. So, take that throwaway glittering generality and use it. That's what the GOP is planning to do.
