You really need to make sure your sights are set more on the NRA leadership that's NOT listening to their membership.

(50,935 posts)financial support that allows the NRA leadership to spread their message.
Among other things, the message of the NRA is that child-slaughter is a reasonable price to pay for a hobby.
That membership does not get to whine that they are not being listened to while they continue to financially support that message.
If the membership has a problem they could stop being members. They don't. They are responsible.

(16,646 posts)NRA funding is predominately from corporations and such. As I understand it, only "lifetime" members get to vote.
And alot of that is pass through for things like insurance.
Many folks are members because in order to belong/use a gun range they require membership. Mostly that requirement exists because of the liability insurance it will provide.

(2,050 posts)I've never even thought about joining the nra, not once, years ago I read la Pierre's book, well at least the first chapter.
And decided there were waaay too similar to drooling foaming at the mouth nut jobs for me.
I've read a few books about the use of firearms, the REAL consequences and Real arguments on when they should be used and what situations didn't call for them.
NOT the gun nut side of the story but reasoned debate, the books were written for law enforcement personnel and citizens who wanted to know the truth about their use and when their use was not called for.
"In the Gravest Extreme" by Massad Ayoob is still available today, the most sobering I've ever read and the best.
Not all gun owners are gun nuts, not all owners think a weapon should be used against another human being.
And when you lump us all together with the whacko gun owners you aren't gaining any converts.
Think what you will, I won't be back to see any replies, the hate I see coming inevitably because of what I've written here is predictable and a waste of my time to read.

(10,602 posts)Two guns are probably a bit valuable. There are other gun organizations that are more responsible. And the fact is that you do not need a military weapon like the AR-15. I had an M-16 in Vietnam but have never desired one as a civilian.
The NRA has a toxic agenda for the US. Being a member of that organization gives them support. Now you may not support what they politically support. Starving them of money is about the only way one can effect them. Obviously members cannot seem to change the leadership or agenda.

(19,233 posts)It blew my mind, because while he isn't extremely political, the times we did talk politics we were basically on the same page. When I questioned him about his reasoning, he said it was all financial; NRA membership gives you $10,000 in property insurance in case your guns are stolen or lost in a fire for only $20/yr, whereas his insurance agent would have charged him more than that per month in supplemental insurance. He's not a gun-stockpiling nut, but does own 2-3 very valuable custom bolt-action deer rifles that would approach the $10,000 in total value.
I'm left wondering if he's just more libertarian and politically tone deaf
