I was lucky enough to be living in Indianapolis during the Pan Am games in the late 1980's and was able to watch Olympic calibre weightlifting there live one evening.
That was all it took. I was hooked for life.
It is an amazing sport.
The saying "Mind Over Matter", had to be written for that sport. Because most of it is psychological.
If you believe you can lift it you probably can. If you don't believe you can lift it you can't.

Now luge, that's my favorite. Those guys are nuts!

I'm with you on track but we have to wait until the second week. They show a little too much swimming for me as all the races look the same.

(3,069 posts)I like the equestrian events, especially the cross country part of combined training, and show jumping. I like dressage too, but it is less exciting. They never televise more than three or four competitors in any case.
I love the Olympics and all the random events like archery and shooting, table tennis (those kids are nuts), crew, weightlifting, and the swimming, diving, track and field, gymnastics, and so many more I can't even think. I never watch that stuff unless it is the Olympics.
I *don't* like the common team sports, though it was interesting to see field hockey on tv.

(3,069 posts)I had Olympic dreams a long, long time ago....not eventing though. I was never brave enough for the cross country part. I was aiming for show jumping. Sigh. A bad crash in junior jumpers and a lack of money ended that dream. Oh well, I still love it and hope NBC shows more than the little bit of dressage that aired today.

(62,517 posts)So far, at least what I can watch on my TV, I have enjoyed all of the events. I do wish they would show some of the less popular events but that's the breaks I guess.
I do lean toward track and field and love the long distance events, but that's because of my running background.

I have found it to be one of the most amazing sites I have ever visited.
Lot of man hours went into it.
Check it out if you have the time. You won't be disappointed.

(108,903 posts)Marti Malloy of the United States, top, competes with Telma Monteiro of Portugal during the women's 57-kg judo competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Monday, July 30, 2012, in London. Photo: Paul Sancya / APLONDON (AP) American judo player Marti Malloy has knocked out the No. 2 seed in a victory that her coach said could allow her to fight for a medal later Monday.
Portuguese fighter Telma Monteiro defeated Malloy in their two last meetings, but U.S. coach Jimmy Pedro described Malloy's recent form as "spectacular."
On Monday, Malloy fought off Monteiro's aggressive attempts to grip her uniform and repeatedly tried to throw Monteiro. The fight went into overtime, when Malloy swept Monteiro's foot to make the winning throw.
Last week, Pedro predicted that if Malloy could get past Monteiro, she would be likely to make it to the semifinals of the women's 57-kilogram division and fight for a medal.

(5,624 posts)its own championships that are more prestigious than the Olympic gold.
For example, in (Men's) Soccer you have the World Cup, the Euros, the Champions League, etc etc. In both club play and international play these events have become greater, more prestigious, and more beneficial to a player's career than Olympic gold. I assume that this has much to do with the age restrictions on players in Olympic soccer, that gameplay is more exciting and competitive in events where there are more veteran players.
And even in Women's soccer, while there may not be as many club championships, there's the Women's World Cup. The team the US fielded for the Olympics is pretty much the same team we had for the WWC. I still watch because the
I like curling, table tennis, and other, lesser known sports where the Olympic Gold is still the highest honor an athlete can strive for.
