This particular comment was in the context of the presidential election, based on the quote I read. In that event, I would refer to her as Presidential Candidate Clinton. Just as reasonable, since she interacted with the person to whom Trump was speaking in her role as Secretary of State, that would also be a good choice.

(99,710 posts)John Fante
(3,479 posts)first lady isn't an accomplishment on its own. And while HRC was outstanding in the role, her roles as US senator and secretary of state were substantially more important.
mythology
(9,527 posts)I sincerely doubt anybody has based their vote on that. Both Senator and Secretary of State were her accomplishments. I certainly wouldn't list first lady when describing just one of her accomplishments.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)When you have someone who is accomplished for reasons other than being married to a man, it is sexist to choose what is, in effect the title "Mrs. Bill Clinton," rather than a title that recognizes her accomplishments.
That is not to diminish anything she accomplished as FLOTUS - but that is because of what she made of the role, not the role itself. The other three potential titles are bestowed in recognition of her own personal accomplishments, not those of her husband.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)That is what I intended to convey and I am confident I was successful in that endeavor. I am beyond flummoxed that my intentions are being impugned for having done so.
P.S. Nothing I have written in this thread diminishes or should be construed as dismining Hillary Clinton's myriad accomplishments.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)I don't think you did it thinking, "Hmmm . . . which title would be least representative of her accomplishments." But when the implications of the choice you made were pointed out to you, instead of saying, "Oops. My bad. That's not what I meant - let me fix it." you dug your heels in.
You have indicated that you chose that because it was a White House setting (or because she was the wife of a former president in the presence of a current foreign president). Are you not aware that Clinton's relationship with that foreign president was as Secretary of State, not wife of Bill? Referring to her as the wife of a president ignores, as if it was unimportant, the international, diplomatic relationship she had as Secretary of State with that very same person.
It is not your intentions that anyone is questioning - or at least I'm not questioning your intentions. Heaven knows I'm sure I say insensitive things without realizing they are insensitive - but when someone who immediately recognizes it as insensitive points it out to me, I try to respond with a little humility to figure out what generated that reaction. Sometimes I even learn from it and don't make the same insensitive mistake the next time.

Sec Clinton ends her tenure as Sec of State
2013-01-29
Tuesday, January 29, Vilnius -
President Dalia Grybauskaitė thanked the outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for support to Lithuania and for personal contribution to the development of relations between the United States and Lithuania.
"The United States has always been an important partner and supporter of Lithuania on the path of consolidating its statehood regained in 1990, fully rejoining the international community of nations, and acceding to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
I am therefore extremely pleased that over the past several years the bonds between the United States and Lithuania have become stronger than ever.
It was during this time that our deep and close bilateral relations evolved into concrete projects and initiatives in security, defense, energy, transport, and other fields," the President wrote in her message.
The President also recalled her meetings with the U.S. Secretary of State in Vilnius, Astana and New York. She placed a special emphasis on their jointly realized initiative: the high level meeting of world women leaders in Lithuania in 2011 where many prominent women from all over the world and from a wide range of international organizations came together to discuss equal opportunities and gender equality.
The President wished Hillary Clinton continued personal and professional success.

On the other hand, progressives ought to be able to recognize and improve on our sensitivity.
This statement says to little girls reading DU that you will always be defined by your husband. No matter how accomplished you are in your own right. Even when the concern is ostensibly about Trump denigrating you in front of someone with whom you had a relationship as secretary of state, you are still only defined by your role as wife of the former president.
Wwcd
(6,288 posts)Hey, I'm a great big lifelong admirer & complete supporter of Hillary & all she stands for.
She has held many well earned titles & with each one came credits to her own work.
I'm in this thread because of Trump's intentionally humiliating statements.
I despise him with every drop of my American blood.
I despise those who worked so hard to strip this country of it promising future for all its citizens by not full on supporting Hillary Clinton.
I don't disagree with your honorable point, however, right now my ire is with the sleaziest man on the planet, Donald Trump.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)Aside from which, when a sentiment is expressed in a particular manner in one place is probably not the only place in which it is expressed in that manner - and there may well be more little girls present on those other occasions. I wasn't limiting that sentiment to little girls who read DU, but using it as an analogy for that kind of careless labeling of women of substance.
Ironically, I'm actually not much of a Clinton fan - but I just don't believe women's achievements should be erased in favor of their connection to the men they marry. I was reading the thread and biting my tongue, until people started suggesting that the OP was alerted on as "insensitive" because the OP called Trump names - and that anyone who alerted on the thread must be a troll. Given that there was already at least one sub-thread suggesting it was inappropriate to call Clinton FLOTUS under these circumstances, that seemed to me to be a nonsensical suggestion.
Trump's petty name calling is less outrageous and less likely to get the world blown up, or to destroy the economy, etc. than a lot of the crap he does. While I hate it, it is less of a concern to me than other things he does.
But I expect better of us.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)It was not my alert, but given the sub-threads here, I'm pretty sure the alert was for referring to Clinton by the title that merely recognizes her marriage to Bill, rather SOS (which recognizes her vast diplomatic and international experience), Senator (which recognizes that she was elected and served her state) or Candidate (which recognizes that she won the national nomination of her party).
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)That and only that is why I chose to refer to Secretary Clinton by that specific honorific, despite her myriad accomplishments. I am offended by these attempts, subtle and not so subtle, to impugn my character.
-Ecclesiastes 7:1
That is why almost every poster inferred my post was alerted on for my comments about Trump.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)not as wife of the president.
Do you really believe that, in a thread in which referring to Clinton as FLOTUS is being pointed out as sexist by at least 4 individuals that someone randomly, on DU, came in and was offended that you called Trump a name?
Which of these fits calling Trump a blithering idiot?
You may note that sexism is expressly one of the bases for the identified (insensitivity) alert. Calling Trump names is not.

A bit like watching Hidden Figures for the second time. I caught dozens of very subtle - but intentional - references to blacks that erased their humanity and existence. I didn't catch them the first time because they weren't hit-you-over-the-head blatant. But they were racist.
Because FLOTUS is fondly tied to Michelle Obama (who does not have a subsequent nationally recognized career, or threee), it isn't hit-you-over-the-head blatant sexism.
But it is sexism to refer to a woman with the post-FLOTUS aaccomplishments of Clinton by the honorific for which the only job requirement was being married to Bill Clinton.

"Physician, heal thyself."
Michelle Obama is a Harvard Law School graduate and had a private and public career, prior to Barack becoming president. It is sad someone would erase that from her history.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)Michelle Obama has not had a formal national or international role (either before or after Obama's presidency). The national knowledge of Michelle Obama comes, almost exclusively, from her role in the White House. So the situation are not equivalent.
That said, my point was that she exploited, in a good way, that role - so progressives have a fond association with a role for which the only qualification is being married to the president. The extraordinary work she did in that role, though, masks the sexism of referring to a woman who went on from that role to be senator, secretary of state, and Democratic presidential candidate by the title that merely means she was married to the president.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)Just as you think you are correct in the context you are discussing in omitting Michelle Obama graduating from one of the two most prestigious law schools in the nation and her public and private career from her history.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)not as FLOTUS. Even though I am sure the sexism was initially unintentional, it no longer is.
As to Michelle Obama, I am not discussing omitting Michelle Obama's history at all. I am explaining why progressives fondness for FLOTUS masks the sexism of using that title when Clinton has served the public in both national and international capacities in the decades since then.
But their positions are not (yet, at least) equivalent. Clinton also graduated from one of the most prestigious law schools in the nation, and had a public and private career before serving as FLOTUS. Do you see me, or anyone else, suggesting you should refer to her using titles from that era? It is not the pre-white house era that elevated either of these two women to national prominence.
When Michele Obama has decades of post-white house experience, I hope we won't be having this conversation about whether it is appropriate to refer to her as the former FLOTUS, rather than whatever honorifics go with whatever she goes on to accomplish in the next 2 decades.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)If Michelle Obama had Hillary Clinton's resume and Trump disrespected her in the manner he disrespected Hillary Clinton, in front of a foreign president, I would refer to her with the same honorific.
It had everything to do with the specific setting in which Trump disrespected her. Surely that is not hard to understand. unless someone is deliberately trying not to.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)an international diplomat, it is pretty much impossible for me to see anything other than sexism in referring to her as President Clinton's wife. Unintentional, at first, but with each shovelful you dig it is harder for me to believe that it is, any longer, being maintained in good faith.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)I have never denied Secretary Clinton's myriad accomplishments. The fact that you are libeling me by suggesting that I am says more about you than it can ever say about me.
P.S. And since you are so fond of innuendo I am beyond curious as to why you would ignore Michelle Obama's JD and her public and private career.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)I'll even give you a free consult: Nothing I've said is even close.

(12,448 posts)without calling someone whose extensive postings show the opposite of sexism. You could have said, for example, that protocol says that her proper title was her latest: Secretary Clinton. You could have said that Hillary Clinton has, indeed, had other roles besides FLOTUS. You could have said all that, politely, without calling the poster sexist, which DSB clearly is not.
But you got to say that, and that's the important thing, isn't it?

I have seen people with all the accomplishments in the world say their proudest achievement was being a good parent or being the parent of someone successful:

His need to dominate, badmouth and diminish Hillary Clinton is part of his petty, narcissistic personality. He's a vindictive, small man.

Excellent point, Tatiana

Undercover footage shot between November 2017 and January 2018 released by Britains Channel 4 News on Tuesday shows Mark Turnbull, managing director of Cambridge Analyticas political division, bragging about how the company came up with the Defeat Crooked Hillary campaign and promoted it on social media.
The OO of Crooked were a pair of handcuffs and it was all about she belongs behind bars, Turnbull says in the video.

"Lock her up!" All of these horrible names and chants are straight out of the Kremlin/KGB handbook for propaganda and psychological influence.

By the way, I don't think there is anything wrong with you calling Hillary Clinton the former FLOTUS. That's just a statement of fact and most people here are aware of her other accomplishments. People can disagree with you all they want about it, but flagging you over this is an abuse of the alert system. Just my two cents.
