General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhy does CA Governor Jerry Brown not say anything about what is going down
in Anaheim? There, a police force has essentially declared war on the people and constituted itself as a 21st-century death squad. And Brown says absolutely nothing, zip, NADA. Just like he said absolutely nothing, zip, NADA when the Oakland Police Department almost killed a couple Occupy Oakland protesters.
And Jerry Brown is supposed to be on our team. He is abso-friggin-lutely pathetic and I shall never vote for him again or any voter initiatives he promulgates.

(62,325 posts)for the people when their brutal cops were beating unarmed, peaceful protesters in some cases, nearly to death.
The silence has been deafening.
Maybe it's time to organize a call-in to Brown's office. Citizens have been KILLED, children attacked by dogs on the streets of America, and not a single word from our government who spend trillions on so-called 'national security' in countries where the people are no threat to us.
Something is very wrong about all this.
Here is Jerry Brown's contact information:
c/o State Capitol, Suite 1173
Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: (916) 445-2841
Fax: (916) 558-3160
Everyone should call his office tomorrow and ask for a statement about the killings in Anaheim and the military police who are on the streets. The media apparently won't be doing it.

(22,271 posts)Jerry Brown isn't the liberal everyone thinks he is. He's a loyal Party boy and does whatever the party tells him. He's actually a centrist for the most part.
You're right. He's said NOTHING about Anaheim and he won't. Just as he said virtually nothing about Oakland. He also VETOED the Hemp Legalization Bill (as did Ahnie). Notice he's not said a word about the feds raiding his state? He's also trying to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and via cuts in education and the safety nets.
And although I'm a big proponent of high-speed rail he's doing everything to shove it through without hearing from the legitimate opposition -- not the partisan GOP but the farmers in the Valley and yes, they DO count! Farmers have legitimate concerns and he's closing his ears to those concerns.
Brown is still riding his "liberal" creds from 40 years ago when in reality he hasn't been a liberal for decades -- if he ever was.
OK, Flak jacket on. I'm ready.

"ensure domestic tranquility," according to the Preamble to the Constitution, but also to "promote the general welfare," not to protect itself.
Here are some unpleasant facts about the situation in Mouseland:
"The police shootings and the demonstrations have only exacerbated deep divisions in Anaheim. The citys western half is poor, predominantly Latino, smoggy, economically depressed and so riddled with crime and street violence that many people say they are afraid to leave their homes. But the eastern half the Anaheim Hills is affluent, conservative and predominantly white. Many of those affluent residents were quick to condemn the vandalism yesterday, and to support the police, saying they have a tough job policing the gangs and should be thanked, not criticized, for the way they do it."- Andrew Gumbel, Guardian
Don't know about you, but I stand with the western half of Anaheim. Anaheim Hills can go fuck itself.

(67,101 posts)looks for the money and protects the sources. "We the people" don't have much of a voice anymore, but those holding lots of money do. This is USA, Inc., "we the people" are in the way in the "new" America. What a shame. To me, what is going on in Anaheim will eventually be seen for much of America. There will not be solutions to problems, but rather police force to suppress those seen as the problem. And protests will be even more brutally suppressed.

(31,182 posts)I had to look up the story. This would be good for "latest breaking news"
http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Tensions-High-as-Protesters-Picket-Anaheim-Police-164216966.html
The protests were prompted by the July 21 shooting of Manuel Angel Diaz during a foot chase with police. He was unarmed.
Tensions were heightened when Anaheim police fatally shot a second man, Joel Acevedo, in a separate incident the next day. On Friday, police shot at but did not hit a burglary suspect.

(10,751 posts)...except for two things: 1 - he is not as adamant in his positions as his father was -- not as much of a crusader for the common man; 2 - related to #1: he's a bit of an elitist -- he doesn't mean to be, probably doesn't even realize it really. He has always been a champion of new ideas and new thinking, in fact his radio show was where I first heard of Vandana Shiva. He also was a champion of the field workers and unions, back in the day -- he supported Cesar Chavez.
That said, my opinion of him has decreased over the past few years. I think he has gone all Third Way on us, which is a crying shame.

(14,180 posts)I just got off the phone with a 'Flora' in Governor Brown's office who said she worked in Constituent Affairs.
I asked her what Governor Brown's position is on the Anaheim PD's shooting of unarmed civilians and she said, "Governor Brown has not issued a public statement yet."
I then asked, "Do you know whether or when he plans to issue a public statement?"
"I don't know," Flora replied, "but I can pass along your concerns."
"Fine," I said, " Governor Brown needs to condemn the actions of the Anaheeim PD in shooting unarmed civilians and in using repressive tactics on demonstrators protesting the Anaheim PD's tactics, including unleashing guard dogs on them and shooting pepper spray and rubber bullets at them. He also needs to instruct CA Attorney General Kamala Harris to open a formal investigation of the APD's actions and policies forthwith."
"I'll be happy to pass along your concerns," Flora said.
On that note, we hung up.
If I do not hear Brown speaking out soon, I'll be going down to Anaheim for the next round of protests (probably next weekend).

(23,867 posts)I'm disturbed by Brown's slide away from caring about the people. I noticed this when he was mayor of Oakland. Although I really know almost nothing about him now. It just appears that he has changed.

(62,325 posts)I will use some of the points you made, if you don't mind. The more people who call, the more likely he is to make a statement. But it's a shame that the people have to push so hard simply to get even a comment on situations like this. And we so far, had had no US official condemnation of the Oakland police or the NYPD or any of the other PDs that so brutally attacked peaceful protesters.
I am going to ask why the Civilian Police are dressed like troops also and why they are armed as if they were going to war.
Be back later after work and will post the results.

(45,319 posts)That city is split into many districts. Loretta Sanchez and two Republicans in the US House. In the CA Senate Lou Correa is a Democrat from the 34th and in the CA House one Democrat among many Republicans the Democrat is 69th district's Jose Solorio.
Have any of these Democrats commented on the police violence going on there? I'd expect strong statements from all of them. Is it across the board silence?

I think starting with the Representatives of that district is a great idea. If the point is exerting public pressure, why not put it everywhere it can be placed?

(154,021 posts)but I am guessing the gov has been "captured."
You have to crush the opposition, the Governor said forcefully, after joking that there were more dignitaries inside the celebration than protesting down the street.
His words are unbecoming of our states highest official and an insult to the hard-working people of our region, most of whom couldnt afford to take off work and attend a protest rally during the work day in this remote spot. But their concerns are valid, heartfelt and deserve serious consideration, not hate or derision.
Let me tell you about some of those people our Governor wants to crush.
