(19,429 posts)STEM research institutions have a great deal of research "know how" that is their edge in getting funding, doing experiments, and producing results. This is never published.
The public knowledge is the research results. In most cases, readers of the journal papers would have significant difficulty in reproducing the research, since they lack the infrastructure and detailed methods and procedures to do the work.
