(36,416 posts)I'm on number four. The last three have been rescue dogs. We laughed when we were looking to accept number three (a double rescue with some real issues), and the agency grilled us on the downside of working dogs. That is, until they discovered we had a history of nothing but working dogs.

(36,416 posts)keeping them mentally engaged. Until they learn the routine, they can escape the reservation faster then you can sneeze; sometimes waiting is just the job they need.

(5,210 posts)and I've had a couple (and a couple of very much NOT very bright but totally lovable dogs), is that they want to USE that intelligence and WILL if you give them the chance, one way or the other.
I had a Redbone Hound who I swear was smarter than me. He was constantly outwitting me. Wish I could think of some examples. He got old enough to start challenging my older male dogs for alpha status, at which point I knew I had to find another home for him. I really loved how smart he was, though.

(36,416 posts)He never dared challenge me or She Who Must be Obeyed, but he slowly started challenging our guests; first air nips and low growls, then it started getting worse. He got sent down the river when SWMBO became pregnant and we realized we had some real concerns. I always hoped he fell into the right environment because he was such a sweet dog with me. I've accomplished a lot with troubled dogs, but he was my one miserable failure.

This video makes me miss my big Border Collie, Patty Girl, so much - I loved that special, smart dog so damn much. She's been gone 9 yrs and I break down every few months when remembering her. But of course, every dog that's ever shared their lives with me has a special place.
