(5,101 posts)Many of us feel deeply sorry. We are witnessing this mess, speechlessly.
America deserves so much better than this clown !
I hope it will comfort you a little, we distinguish very well between you and Trump. He is the laughingstock, not his fellow citizens.

(5,995 posts)If we had a Parliament, we might not have this situation. The extremes could vote in their own loonies and then a unity coalition could govern from a practical middle ground.
I fear that the open racism of the Trump admin has emboldened the European Right parties.

(5,101 posts)Your country is a bit different : it might be hard to implement a representative parliament.
One of the problems is the way the president is elected.
It is not so much the Electoral College the problem, but the power given to the president.
Many countries as a president who hasn't been elected directly (Germany, Italy, ...). In this case, the position is almost only honorific, the president has no power to make significant changes or make decisions that will weight on the citizens.
If you choose to give a real power to a leader, then, the one elected must reflect the citizens will. In the US, it is a combination of a president who does not always reflect the will of the vast majority, and a real power, in my opinion too much power.
There is probably something to work on there.
Right wingers tried to take advantage of Trump's election, but they failed. In France, Marine Le pen was literally wiped !

Thanks for sending us the headlines. I'm glad you don't blame all of America for the lunatic in the White House.
We are traveling to Europe next month and I have to say that for the first time in my life, I have a little bit of trepidation about admitting that I am an American. Sad state of affairs.
I always make an effort to be as polite as possible when traveling overseas. Maybe I can erase the effects of one ugly American.

(15,241 posts)Not to say that the US is a model, now or ever. But if the forces that are taking it down succeed, the rest of the democracies are in peril.
We (democracies) are so much bigger and more powerful than the dark forces but we are also independent and have different perspectives. A monolithic evil, especially in today's information world, can fracture and sow artificial dissension.
