General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just got back from the Rose Parade
and the Occupy Movement was very much a presence at the end of the official floats.
everyone seemed peaceful and their purpose seemed to be well recieved by the crowds waiting to leave.
I'm glad, because right off the main parade route, the Sherrifs were "loaded for bear" w/ the full body armor and plastic cuffs. I watched as they shadowed the marchers mostly out of sight of those still watching the last of the floats.
I must say I was very concerned that this would turn into something ugly and give the MSM an opportunity to bring discredit, but, so far so good.
Now, lets occupy the ballot box.

(14,887 posts)parade coverage is in an assigned spot near the start down Colorado Blvd. So there will be no cameras set up at the end of the parade. Only cameras at the end will be 'news' cameras.
The coverage was crap anyway. The parade was moving so fast, there were scant float descriptions or time to view them.
My son figured since the parade was on a Monday they were trying to get Colorado Blvd open for regular traffic as soon as possible.
Corporations rule!
Good for OWS. I wasn't expecting to see any evidence of their presence during the parade as those images are tightly controlled.

(42,689 posts)Televised hockey on broadcast television has been on off and on affair for decades. With the advent of regional sports networks and the national coverage by Versus (now NBC Sports Channel), there probably is more hockey on television than at any other time in the league's history. And the Winter Classic, which is in its fifth year, draws audiences that are as big, if not bigger, than some of the college bowl games.
If you think that the networks scheduled the Winter Classic in order to avoid covering OWS' appearance after the formal end of the Rose Parade, you are mistaken.

(38,893 posts)I'm saying they'd air ANYTHING but #Occupy. None of the major stations aired a moment of the march. I'm hoping for video from RT and other "secondary" sources.

Rose Parade 2012: Cheers, jeers greet 'Occupy Octopus' human float
January 2, 2012 | 12:05 pm
Hundreds of Occupy the Rose Parade protesters marched down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena on Monday after the real event was over, lining up behind police squad cars, tow trucks and the last official float to carry their message of economic inequality.
...
Protester Art Goldberg, 70, of Echo Park told a young woman as he walked past: "Don't watch history, make it."
She crossed under the yellow caution tape and joined the march.

Apparently the 70-foot octopus float carried by an estimated 5,000 Occupy L.A. protesters at the end of today's Rose Parade wasn't awesome enough for KTLA, the premiere local station covering the event.
Reporters gushed over marching bands, floral arrangements and even a police horse brigade led by LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. But after float No. 43 had passed the finish line, the cameras shut off.
...
A contributing factor to the Occupy snub may have been that occupiers' intentions today weren't all feel-good. More than just another general anti-bankster protest on a national stage, the Rose Parade demonstration was an occupation of the popular Pasadena event itself.
...
Organizer Mark Lipman told City News that "the march would spotlight the role Wells Fargo Bank -- a Rose Parade sponsor -- had in the home foreclosure crisis."
KTLA also notoriously shut off aerial coverage of the LAPD raid of Occupy L.A. in the wee hours of December 1, so as not to screw with police strategy.
