Obama had easily won the state in 2008. Then in the midterm election of 2010 the Republicans showed up to vote and the Democrats did not. Walker received 90% of the vote that went to McCain in 2008 but his opponent Tom Barrett only got around 65% of Obama's vote total here. The result: the entire state government flipped to Republican control and Russ Feingold lost his Senate seat.
In February of 2008 we had massive rallies in Madison to protest Walker's actions with crowds reaching over 100,000 at times and the world celebrated our actions. I was there.
Our goal was to recall Walker but that's when the Law of Unintended Consequences came to bite us in the ass. Walker couldn't be recalled until he had been in office for a year so the election didn't occur for a year and a half, June of 2012, after he had taken office.
Along with lots of Koch brothers' money this allowed Walker to build a power political machine here in Wisconsin and unfortunately Democrats don't turn out to vote in June like they did in the 2012 presidential election. So Walker survived the recall and the Republicans continued to solidify their power in the state after gerrymandering it in 2011.
Since the GOP controlled everything they passed a voter ID bill to suppress the vote from the Left. Now is the time when Democrats and those on the Left proceeded to throw the entire state of Wisconsin under the bus including those who have worked hard to get rid of Walker.
Plus, when Walker was up for reelection in 2014 you can't just run somebody against him whose only elected experience was to a school board.

But Walker is up for reelection this November and we have the hope for a Blue Wave,
so how about a little help rather than the put-downs of Wisconsin for being the Mississippi of the North?

before 2010. MN mostly has being electing Democrats. These differences in outcomes are seen between red and blue states and thousands of municipalities all around the nation.

I'd love to retire to a good liberal city with their typically excellent amenities but can't afford to. It's conservative for us because the wellbeing created by liberal governance, and the people and dynamic businesses that attracts, raise real estate prices above our diminished means.

It is unfortunate that too many commenters disrespect the many millions in red states who always vote blue and instead callously insult red and blue with the same brush. Believe me, as a GA liberal, I have complete sympathy with WI liberals, and other WI Democrats.

But this is a teaching moment. Too many even here on DU were raised in an atmosphere permeated with Republican Kool-Aid and do not realize what a really good party we are, that we are very far from just being the better of two bad choices.
