It would basically mess up everything. Sitting presidents are being polite to the family when they stay away.

There are lots of things to dislike Trump for. This isn't one of them.

And Eleanor was head of the liberal ring of the party, in spirit at least.

I understood that the Bush's didn't want him there. I don't know if
Barbara requested it or what (especially considering the cracks he's made about Jeb and from I understand she was all about family). But that's what I heard/read somewhere.

Not that I'm a fan of either Bush, but compared to the current resident of the White House (I still feel gut punched calling Trump President) they both come off as genuine statesmen.

Besides all of the Trumped up election panel that was running, I am pretty sure all of that was staged too from this constant lockstep going on right now and the using of the FIX(FOX) to run the White House..I haven't seen the GOP for years now

“President and Mrs. Carter regret that they are unable to attend,” the Carter Center in Atlanta said in a statement Thursday morning. “President Carter will be on a private trip overseas, and although she is recovering, Mrs. Carter is not yet able to travel following her recent intestinal surgery.”

Imagine the cold shoulder chumpy would get from the Obamas, the Clintons, and the Bushes. He'd have to watch them all be friendly with each other while leaving orange mcorangeface out of the group.

What a slob he would have looked like sitting on the end of the row next to President Obama, and President Clinton. He couldn't stand the side by side comparisons.

They send the current FL as their representative, so this wasn't a breach of protocol.

As the New York Post explains: “In recent decades, presidents have not attended the funerals of former first ladies.”

We examined the last five funerals that were held for former first ladies. We found that while it is customary for first ladies to attend such services, a sitting president attended only one:

President Obama did not attend Betty Ford’s funeral services... But first lady Michelle Obama did attend, along with former first ladies Rosalynn Carter, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Reagan. ... President George W. Bush did not attend the funeral for Lady Bird Johnson, who passed away in 2007. First lady Laura Bush did attend, as did former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, and former first ladies Rosalynn Carter, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Reagan. ...President Bill Clinton attended the graveside services of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis at Arlington National Cemetery on May 23, 1994, and delivered an address. ... Clinton did not, however, attend the funeral of former first lady Pat Nixon... President Ronald Reagan did not attend former first lady Bess Truman’s funeral in 1982, according to the Washington Post. First lady Nancy Reagan did attend, along with former first ladies Rosalynn Carter and Betty Ford.

Spanky doesn't care about protocol, but it's likely that he was either asked not to attend or decided he'd rather play golf since he wouldn't be the center of attention.

was when JFK went to Eleanor Roosevelt's funeral and even attended a lunch at her youngest son's home. (And what prominent Democrat would have skipped ER's services?)

But, remember, security requirements were not as strict 50+ years ago as they are today.

he'd have been squirming and fidgeting - have we ever seen him just sitting still anywhere he's not the focus of attention?

And after the service, no telling how boorishly he would have behaved, how many inappropriate things he would have said and how many people he would have disgusted and insulted.

I have a feeling everyone involved is glad he stayed his ass at home.

Not to mention the optics of pictures of the Trumps being put far away from anyone famous. Like George P. Bush.
