i may even kick in a couple extra bucks if we surpass the $500 mark.

(94,302 posts)I don't want to sound disparaging, but I play in the big leagues when it comes to campaign financing (currently spending approx $100 K for this cycle) and I get a lot more requests for money than I'm able to provide, so I look carefully at the prospects for each race. Every analytical group I read lists Cantor's district (VA-7) as "Solid Republican", which means 1) you're wasting your money, and 2) you're NOT spending that money on a district that's in play. It may make you feel good to try to stick it to Cantor, but the way things are going, I don't think we can afford any chance to pick up the seats that are winnable.
HangOnKids
(4,291 posts)Why did you sound so disparaging?
mopinko
(69,984 posts)elleng
(130,714 posts)This is ONE of the reasons the prospects are real, from mudcat's #11 yesterday:
'The internals show that the 7th District doesn't think Cantor is too pretty...approval rating 37%, re-elect 41%, replace 43%, but the district is +12 Rs.'
You do know, I assume, that Virginia is in play?
dmr
(28,344 posts)but first, I want to thank you for contributing.
If we only gave to a sure thing, then any little money any of us give isn't as such a big deal as the money sent in to a campaign that we truly believe in - one that needs us; and/or one that is critical to not only the candidate's district, but vital to our nation at large.
Eric Cantor is a bad man by betraying our nation with privileged Congressional information; and his hypocritical tea-bagging antics is injurious to our country.
When I get paid, I'll send a few dollars, myself. A few dollars is better than none, & a belief is as important as a sure thing.
brooklynite
(94,302 posts)...because that's a waste of money as well.
My database, which I update regularly, lists 85 competitive House races, including Paul Hirschbiel, also in Virginia, but in a competitive pickup opportunity district.
The money raised today for Powell, while an admirable effort, brings his Cash on Hand to $150,000. Cantor has banked over $2 million.
mopinko
(69,984 posts)just for brooklynite-
i will put up another $100 if we hit $2000.
and another $100 if we hit $3000.
and this is why-
is this a winnable district? like dr dean, i believe every district is winnable one democrat at a time. we need a 50 state strategy. the dnc might not be using that strategy, but i am.
there are wins and there are wins. reaching out, building the democratic party in areas like this, is a win.
even this right here is a big win, imho. bringing virtual democrats out to help shoe leather democrats is a win.
backing away from a good fight is just not my way. as long as the other guy walks away with some lumps too, i am fine with it.
i am chuckling at the thought of cantor with a bloody nose right now!
so
to all of you who have stepped up to the plate.
and to you, brooklynite-
justabob
(3,069 posts)and to everyone who was able and willing to donate!!
brooklynite
(94,302 posts)...his philosophy was NOT that every district was winnable; it was that the Democratic Party should complete in every district. And in a world of infinite resources I would agree. But -I- don't have infinite resources (and even if I did, the FEC wouldn't let me spend them), and neither do you. The $$$
you're giving Wayne Powell are $$$ you didn't give to Darcy Burner, Alan Grayson, Elizabeth Warren, etc. Are those not also "good fights" and much more winnable?
Let's be clear, I'm not begrudging his decision to run or your decision to support him. I'm just pointing out the political realities when you ask others to join in.
mopinko
(69,984 posts)its not about winning, it is about fighting.
and actually i have given to 2 of your 3. plus tammy duckworth and jan schakowsky. jan is a sure thing, but she spreads it around.

As polling indicates, we will defeat Eric Cantor if we can tell Waynes story and increase his name recognition in the 7th Congressional District.
This will require us to raise $1000,000 in the next three weeks. We are ready to tell the story on TV, Radio, newspapers and billboards
we just need the money.
If each of the 3,162 contributors, who have already generously given, gave another $50 we would have more than enough to get started towards ending Eric Cantors auction of the American political system.

Also attending his town hall in Fredericksburg this evening.
Think we can kick this up again, mop? I've done 2 posts on the subject w/in the last hour. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
mopinko
(69,984 posts)just to remind people that it doesn't take much.
one voice can change a room. and if one voice can change a room, it can change a city. and if it can change a city, it can change a state. and if it can change a state, it can change a nation. and if it can change a nation, it can change the world. your voice can change the world. your voice can change america.
so i just want to know,
are you fired up? ready to go? fired up? ready to go?
let's go change the world.

(130,714 posts)Just returned from Town Hall in Fredericksburg, VA, meeting Wayne Powell. VERY nice guy, intelligent, progressive, our kind of guy.
ALSO just read my e.mail, and received this correction, so lets keep it in mind: Dear Friend,
The last email that you received from the campaign asked for a whopping total of 1000,000. While we on the finance side of things wouldn't mind seeing such a sum, I assure you the additional zero was a mistake. That was quite the monetary Freudian slip. Our actual goal is 100k, and we're almost there! As always, we appreciate your generous contributions.
Regards,
Lela Graham
We're almst there! FIRED UP! READY TO GO!
