What I found in the 4/$1.00 bin at the local Dollar Tree today

I thought you'd all enjoy this. I found 10 copies of the ever-lovely Sarah Palin's Going Rogue in the bin. I picked one up and the store manager said "we've had them here for months-no one wants them."

Four items for one dollar and even then they couldn't sell them.

I regret not taking a picture for everyone.

Two strips of 2" crepe ribbon folded back and forth over each other. Must be two SEPARATE strips, and it helps to leave a little tail on one of them.

With the tail hanging down, put the folded square of paper cornerwise into your circled thumb and forefinger.

Now pull the tail. Keep pulling. Pull some more. A turn of tape, or a dab of glue in the right place will keep what remains from unravelling.

Reuse the tail as the non-tail piece in the next flower.

for an unintended use, that is my freedom to do so. It is not like I'm trying to get all the books in my neighborhood, or town, or county or state or country and destroy them so that others who might like her intellectual ruminations might never have to see them. No, I just want to have some fun.....and I have been known to turn the Austin Chronicle into paper mache....Gawd knows that the chronicle contains far more interesting literature than Ms. Palin's tome. And it makes some awesome pinatas.

to books is the current generation's seemingly total lack of need for them. I think we are becoming too dependent on electronic media for our information. The problem with electronic media is that it is easily edited without being readily apparent that a change has occurred. I mean, if a certain book was found to be politically dangerous, how hard would it be for the power-that-be to alter the content of your kindle the next time you log onto Amazon? You can say that could never happen in this country, but in the last 15 years I have seen a lot of things happen here that I wouldn't have imagined 30 years ago.

if it still doesn't sell, the books will be destroyed.

I hate to see waste and I'd hate to see them tossed in the trash. Other books have been tossed in the dumpsters before at the local Dollar Tree so this will be the eventual resting place.

I know a few have gone dumpster diving after everything's been tossed and brought back crossword puzzle books and such. On occasion they'll dig out actual books and give them away or donate them-as long as they don't make a mess the local police turn a blind eye.

I'd rather see the paper put to good use, instead of sitting in a landfill. And her wreaths are quite lovely-she has given a few away in the past to nursing home residents so they have something pretty in their rooms.

but, in this case, the books will be thrown in a dumpster, taken to a landfill and allowed to slowly rot. I hate to see any kind of unnecessary waste.

Our local library has so many copies of it that they are selling all but two of them off. (They offer sales to the public to raise funds-it's usually books that have multiple copies donated.) And our library is a part of a group of a number of libraries located in small towns-according to the librarian, they can't give those books away. (Believe me, I asked last month why so many copies were out for sale and that was the response.)

I'd rather see it actually go to a good use instead of being trashed. I know someone who makes paper rosettes out of books. (She usually gets her books from a used bookstore when the book is no longer fit for resale-the most common reason is because there are too many pages missing.) She makes the rosettes, adds them to wreath forms, and then will sometimes donate them to nursing home residents to cheer up their rooms.

It's better than nothing.

I'd rather see some use out of them. I hate the thought of them becoming trash. Heck, shredding them and turning the pages into packing material would be better than the landfill.

you have one of my dream jobs. Getting paid to be surrounded by books. I love libraries, and always vote for initiatives that benefit them. I really miss the downtown branch of the Cleveland library. It was something special, at least it was when I left in 1992. I was there about once a week. Even at 13, I was allowed to take the train downtown and come home with my grandmother after she got off of work. I always hit the library and the hot dog vendor.

I have the same visceral reaction to the destruction of any book, no matter how crappy or overstocked. But you have to do something with them.

but nobody is saying to take away all the copies and burn them.

These are books in a bargain bin that nobody wants. They're just kindling anyway. When they finally dump them from the dollar store, they be pulped to recycle the paper.

Should we no longer recycle paper just because it used to be a book?

I think your "outrage" may have clouded your thinking this one through.

I would totally steal it.

I've seen Shrub's book "Decision Points" at the dollar store as well, but it still costs a whole buck.

On the subject of book burning, it seems different to burn or otherwise destroy books that are just total worthless trash, than to destroy them based on fanaticism of any flavor, religious or political.

These are the big old paper bags from grocery stores so you could pack 30-40 paperbacks in there.

The same copies of Limbaugh's books are there every time and nobody wants them.

Should be plenty of dead trees to burn at her expense.

Heck, offer to take all of Salin Parah's book off for a penny. No more, no less. They'd be making something out of nothing anyways.

Ours does and they rotate what goes in it. Two weeks ago it was dvds. A couple of months ago it was Easter decorations. I've purchased holiday jigsaw puzzles and coloring books from it in the past. Four for a dollar is a good deal, even if usually off season.

Ours does it to rid itself of stock.

I can't donate them either-the library is trying to sell off their copies. They've had a number of copies of the that book for sale for the past couple of months to the public-they just have had too many donated to them.

I know someone who does crafts with books. Usually she uses books that have fallen apart and are missing pages but she's mentioned maybe purchasing a few of these instead. She'll use the pages for rosettes and the covers for book purses.

I'd rather that happen then what will happen if they don't sell-they'll just throw them in the dumpster out back. They tear off the cover and toss them.

Bebelplatz.

That said, when I read Christian "advice to singles" drivel by Harold Ivan Smith, I wanted to burn it. He thinks you have to have a state-approved screwing license known as a "Marriage License" or else Gawd will burn you in hell, because Christians in general and Christian authors in particular KNOW what gawd wants you to do.

We used to fold up the Reader's Digest like that Christmas tree, but we folded every page, glued the first page to the last. The teacher would spray paint them green or gold.
