Nicolle Wallace's Analogy: Sarah Palin Was A 'Canary in the Coal Mine' That The GOP Base Had Changed

Nicolle Wallace worked on the McCain 2008 campaign, and said the rise of Sarah Palin was, to her, like the proverbial canary in the coal mine, indicating that the Republican Party base was changing.

I've got a better analogy for you: A Beauty Contest (in honor of The Donald)

Imagine the 1980s Republican Party as a beauty contest with 100 people in the audience. A bunch of well dressed, middle aged, middle class white people, who claimed to care about the future and education of young girls. And the swimsuit competition was only a PART of the contest.

Then, around the turn of the century, the GOP decided to throw out the scholarship, and the talent competition, and the speeches about world peace, and JUST HAVE THE SWIMSUIT COMPETITION. In fact, in the age of Trump, they switched the one piece swimsuit to a MICROBIKINI.

10 people in the audience got up and left, but 40, REALLY CREEPY looking guys came in. Maybe the GOP had dropped the pretense of being all about family values, but they considered this to be a GREAT thing, because they had a bigger audience, and were selling more tickets.

Okay, GOP...what that proved was that you NEVER had an audience of people interested in family values, and the education of talented young women. You ALWAYS had an audience of HORN DOGS who wanted to see a MEAT SHOW.

In 1980 their leader said "Russia is bad, and free trade is good!" And you all said "Yeah, whatever. We're just here for the racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and politics of resentment." Then, fast forward 48 years, and your leader says "Russia as GOOD, and FREE TRADE is bad!" And again, you all said "Yeah, whatever. We're just here for the racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and politics of resentment."

The GOP base never cared about free trade competition or small government. It never had ANYTHING to do with ideology. It had EVERYTHING to do with DOG WHISTLE POLITICS. You thought the Dog Whistle Politics was just the icing on the cake, that brought an additional 20% of your voters into the tent? WRONG! ALMOST ALL of them were there for the dog whistle. Which is why, with the election of Trump, you're not even bothering to hide it anymore.
