...in response to a deposition, from the Stormy Daniels case, for example, it will be unprecedented and historically newsworthy, but at this point it won't shock America much at all.
Thing is, some 40% of Americans are willing to allow Trump to further that deceptive course. As this investigation moves closer to implicating the president, he's going to be aided by nearly the entire republican party, both pols and the public who support him, both as co-conspirators, and ultimately as co-defendants.

(14,959 posts)but it wasn't. About a third of the country will justify and excuse ANYTHING he does because they identify themselves as being on the same team. In-group/out-group garbage is that strong. It is enough to make you scream.

(7,431 posts)Trumpy fans want a loudmouth con artist who sells them the dream of white American dominance and American exceptionalism. If Trumpy lies enough about American superiority, his Fanboys can believe it's true, insulate themselves into Trumpy's bubble, and they can live there for as long as it doesn't burst. They don't care if the bubble has a lifespan that will end.
Some folks are just authoritarian and want an authoritarian leader. Trumpy has some extra pizzazz because he's a TV man, a showman, and as amoral as they come. He brands himself as one who takes the shortest distance between problem and solution, and runs roughshod over anything that stands in his way. Ah... a man of action. In reality, he's a coward and a liar. But reality isn't important to his Fanboys. Only the bubble is important.
Just take a look at how non-productive the Republican Congress has been. This is good. All of this bad news makes it even harder for them to pass laws. A fifth amendment pleading would be even more pressure on his popularity.
The Executive branch is a total disaster of course, but at least much of that can be reversible if we take the White House in 2020.
