Nearly 60 Percent of Republicans Don't Want A Woman President In Their Lifetime, Poll FindsBY TIM MARCIN ON 4/26/18 AT 10:02 AM
In 2016, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton came as close as anyone in history to becoming the first female president of the United States. But she, of course, lost to Donald Trump.
A new poll from YouGov released Thursday found that a majority of Americans think, however, that they will see the first woman president in their lifetime. However, that doesn't mean everyone would like to see it happen.
Asked if they'd see a woman president in their lifetime, 20 percent of respondents said they "definitely will," while 43 percent said they "probably will." A total of 63 percent believed they would likely see a female president before they die.
A comfortable majority of Republicans59 percentresponded no, they don't hope to see a woman president in their lifetime, according to YouGov. In comparison, 89 percent of Democrats and 63 percent of independents responded that yes, they hoped to see a woman president before they died.

(11,986 posts)My voting preferences have nothing to with gender or ethnicity. Did I specifically *want* an African American president? No, I didn't much care, I jus wanted a president who embodied certain goals and ideals, and I very happily voted for Obama, his color having nothing to do with it. I don't think everyone who voted for Obama specifically wanted an AA president, nor do I think that everyone who voted for McCain dd it simply because they wanted to avoid having an AA president. I'm sure there were lots of voters who did vote for those reasons, but I think most people probably voted based on other things, not their color.
So do I specifically WANT a woman president in my lifetime? No, it doesn't really matter to me. I voted for Hillary, and I would gladly vote for Elizabeth Warren, but their gender has absolutely nothing to do with my reasons for voting for them. I don't particularly "want" to see a female, Hispanic, Asian, Jewish, or any other "person category" of President. I just want a good President regardless of any of those things.
So if I were surveyed, I would have said I don't want a female president, despite no qualms about it at all, because to me, it's simply an irrelevant factor, neither something I specifically want to happen nor something I specifically want to avoid having happen. (I understand it is a very important factor for some people, though.)

Yeah, I'm a sucker for Florida stories. I'm very fond of MacDonald, Dorsey, Hiaasen, Leonard et al. Serge is my favorite fictional serial killer, and I've hoisted a few with Dorsey a few times in Tampa, The Keys, and at Lucky's on "The Loop". I lived in Florida for five years, but the summer heat started making me ill, so I had to move back north (I know, very weird). I still love Florida though, and get there for visits whenever I can. I love your state, but I just can't live there anymore. The older I get, the worse the heat bothers me, the exact opposite of everyone else. I'm weird like that.
rzemanfl
(29,556 posts)Other good ones are James W. Hall, Randy Wayne White and McBain's Matthew Hope series. Those all might be et als you've read.
I moved to Florida in 1996, from Wisconsin before it became Nazified, and have never regretted it despite the huge reduction in income we sustained to do it.
SergeStorms
(19,193 posts)so we're originally from about the same latitude. The first two years there (2000-2002) I returned to New York for the summer months. The going back and forth and keeping up two residences became too much to handle. I sold the place up north and stayed in Florida year round. Then the summers started to make me sick, and I mean sick! Temperatures over 100 degrees every day with 100% humidity was just too much for this old body to absorb. Many doctors appointments and three summers later I decided enough was enough and moved back north. I love Florida and all it has to offer environmentally, but the wilting h-e-a-t made it impossible to stay.
I'm glad you're doing alright there, and hope you can keep your head with all the extreme right-wing loonies that live there. We need more "blue" people in Florida. Many more!
rzemanfl
(29,556 posts)It never gets that hot here.
SergeStorms
(19,193 posts)to be close to my mother who was failing at the time, then moved to St. Pete after that. I traded the heat and humidity for the traffic on Rt.19, and it was still damned hot in the summer. If you're not right on the beach, forget it. Of course all the blacktop and concrete make 'heat islands' that artificially raise the temps by about 10 degrees. I can always put more clothes on up north, but the law only allows you to take so much off down there. I still get down there a couple times a year, and that's working for me, for now anyway.
rzemanfl
(29,556 posts)I do like to get down to St. Pete once in a while. The North Shore Aquatic Complex has the best pool I have ever been in.
SergeStorms
(19,193 posts)but it's god-awful hot in the summer. Stuck right in the center of the state. It's also the home of some of the craziest right-wing bastards in the world. Just south of the city there's a John Birch Society billboard. The first one I've ever witnessed in my life. I knew it was the wrong place for me the instant I saw it, but the mother thing........ I joined the Highlands County Democratic association and was immediately made President of same. There were only 8-10 active members at any given time, and I guess they needed some "new blood". It was the loneliest office in the country. I think there were only a little over 300 registered Democrats in the entire country, and most of them didn't announce the fact. Go figure. It was a very inactive and lonely job, and this was during the Bush campaign for his second term. Trying to get anyone to put a Kerry sign in their yard was next to impossible. After the election Mom died and I moved to St. Pete. I absolutely love the beach there, and I took many charter fishing trips (another of my passions) out of Tarpon Springs, and did a fair amount of Pompano (and the occasional Bonefish) fishing in the flats around the Tampa area.
I do love Florida, despite the love bugs, mosquitoes, other bugs as big as the birds up north, lizards, snakes, the terrible tourists......but the heat was actually killing me. It made me physically ill. I lost over 40 pounds and was absolutely skeletal. The Doctors couldn't figure it out (all they would say was that it was something 'environmental') so I moved back north. I put the weight back on and felt great again. Who knows what it really was, but I blame it on the heat. A wonderful place to visit for me, but I could never live there again.
rzemanfl
(29,556 posts)I've done a lot of fishing down here myself, mostly off the beaches. The sewage spills from the last two fall storms discouraged me from getting into the water and I didn't fish in the fall at all. Since I got Silver Sneakers I started swimming laps for the first time since Kennedy was President and have gotten to the point where it takes up a good amount of my time. I will never be a great swimmer but keep making slow progress.

(6,831 posts)Randy Wayne White's "The Man Who Invented Florida" is one of the funniest books I ever read. It came out in 1993, but I re-read it last year and it still cracks me up. Florida has always been full of colorful crazies.
SergeStorms
(19,193 posts)I'll have to grab a copy and give it a read, on your recommendation, of course! Florida has more "colorful" and outright crazy people - per capita - than anywhere else in the world. I'd stake my reputation as a ne'er-do-well on that!
And welcome to Democratic Underground. It's great to have you!

As a nation, black men were given the right to vote long before we trusted women with that tool. Admittedly, prohibition didn't help cement their cause, but I can give women another chance. Big of me, huh?

It would appear a good number of Republican women voted 'no' in order to get to that 59% number. The self-loathing must be horrible for them. I guess when you're told you're "not good enough" your entire life you get to believe it.

(58,724 posts)The question was:
Do you personally hope that the United States elects a woman President of the United States in your lifetime, or not?
Responding "no" is not exactly the same as saying you don't want a woman president.
Also - how do we account for the 11 percent of Democrats who responded in the negative?
Or, more pointedly, the fact that 5 percent of Hillary Clinton voters responded "no" to that question.
