ABC's rebooted comedy cedes the viewership title for the first time Tuesday, spilling another 3 million viewers.
Roseanne finally took a sizable hit Tuesday, losing the night's audience crown to NCIS after a week's hiatus from the air.
The ABC comedy landed with 10.3 million viewers and a 2.5 rating among adults 18-49, with respective spills of 23 and 26 percent. It's the first big drop for Roseanne since it returned to the air with the biggest scripted telecast of the season.
Roseanne's status as the top broadcast series of the year seems to be in little danger, dips or not. With the latest live-plus-three day averages for its first five episodes, its average 6.1 rating among adults 18-49 outpaces that of NBC's This Is Us by a sizable 30 percent.
Among live telecasts, Roseanne was the easy winner among adults 18-49 Tuesday, pacing a full point higher than No. 2 The Middle (1.5 adults). But its diminished audience meant that NCIS bested it in that race by 1.8 million viewers. It's a close call as to who will finish No. 2 in adjusted ratings this afternoon, but CBS' Bull currently ties Roseanne's audience tally for the night.

(21,111 posts)Watched the first two out of curiosity was bored and would rather watch else. I hope ABC loses a lot of money.

(6,397 posts)So you may be hoping they lose money, and they might on a second season where it'll not have quite the same curiosity level, but they're making a lot of money right now.

(2,795 posts)Those two opportunists are probably already dming each other about it. Trump to get positive tv time and help out a loyalist spread his filth and her to up her ratings and save her show.

(5,210 posts)And the ONLY reference to Trump so far has been in the premiere episode. It was grossly misunderstood / mischaracterized by everyone who complained about the Trump tie-in.

(2,795 posts)It was funny. It had some good storylines with the other cast. But I didn't love it enough to make a mental note to tune in so found I was missing episodes.
I most likely didn't care enough because I know Roseanne is a trumpbot now and has done a 180 from the Roseanne I used to watch decades ago.

(15,805 posts)Then she got a second look from curious viewers who wanted to see what the much ballyhooed media driven fuss was all about. Now that viewers have seen the show and seemed to found it overhyped and not what they were expecting, they're going to start drifting away to watch other shows.

(6,397 posts)So no surprise that it took a chunk out.
But you know what? Most time-shifted it or watched it on demand later. The overnights are always interesting with the ratings but the Live+7 is where the real data is at. When a show gets 15 million on live and then live+7 adds another 8 million, and a lot of that is on-demand where commercials can't be skipped, that's huge.
Obligatory I am not watching this show but understands how TV and ratings work tag.

(62,269 posts)I would be surprised if it makes 3 seasons, even though its ratings are still good, its humor will get old quick.

(19,024 posts)I think people are worried she's going to normalize Trump voter bigotry, but it's already been normalized. This show , for Trump voters is a step way to the left from the crazy reality they live in.

I hate fucking defending this show in a weird way because I hate the show and have not watched it at all.
But so many people comment without actually reading the article and understanding what's going on that it makes me question just about any response from most articles.
The sound and fury days of DU are strong and have long diminished its usefulness.
That's fucking depressing.

(30,540 posts)as far as I can tell only the first episode was political and it was kind of funny. Since then it's centered on family relationships, pretty much same old, same as far as sitcoms go. Roseanne has always had a meaner edge regarding family, lots of sniping and snarky comments which I've never cared for. Last night the theme was who was going to be stuck taking care of Roseanne's aged mother or should they just dump her in a sub-par nursing home. No wonder the ratings are diving!
