Rudolph W. Giuliani, a new attorney on President Trumps legal team, said Thursday that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III is seeking to trap the president into committing perjury with a request for an extended interview.
What theyre really trying to do is trap him into perjury, and were not suckers, Giuliani, a former New York City mayor and federal prosecutor, said during a morning interview on Fox & Friends.
Giuliani, conducting a fresh round of media interviews Thursday seeking to bolster Trumps standing, asserted that the original aim of the special counsel to investigate possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 campaign is now dead.
This silly deposition is about a case in which he supposedly colluded with the Russians but theres no evidence, Giuliani said.

For Trump, a "perjury trap" is asking him to say anything under oath. Period.

(11,885 posts)His client trump has no intentions of being truthful , causing his own problem from lying to him. Just like it applies to everyone else, but trump wants special treatment, or no rules apply to him, ever. He refuses to be truthful to the American people , and has lost all credibility , and no one should take anything he says as the truth. He's just another criminal in the White house, like Nixon was.

(4,066 posts)If, as they maintain, 45 is completely innocent, then there's no need to worry about perjury. I mean, Santorum just recently said he's never heard 45 lie. So, what's the big deal?

It's real simple: tell the truth, lie (i.e. commit perjury), or invoke your 5th A rights against self-incrimination. There's no trap, and there's nothing unfair about it.

(4,461 posts)... Trump is already in a trap. But its one of his own making.
1. He can tell the truth, and reveal that hes guilty of the substantive allegations against him.
2. He can lie, and be guilty of perjury (and probably still the substantive allegations as well).
3. He can plead the fifth.
He doesnt want to plead the fifth. He thinks - correctly - that will make him look bad with his base.
His lawyers cannot let him answer any questions because #s 1 and 2 are no win scenarios.
So hes blustering and tweeting and sending out surrogates to stall until he figures out a way to cut the investigation off at the knees, or figures out how to take the fifth without embarrassment. But thats much easier said than done.
This was the rock and hard place Dowd and Cobb were stuck in. Giuliani has merely taken their place. Nothing else has changed.
