This is an incredibly important art/social statement! Childish Gambino's new video.

On edit: I’ve had exactly two responses to this, both upset at the fact that I didn’t warn people that there is a simulated shooting-two in fact-in the video. It’s not gory and you’ll see FAR worse on television every day. I’m sorry to edit in this warning because it does a great deal to blunt the impact of what I think is an astonishing statement about what it’s like for black people on America. And the demands for not being upset by a fictional depiction of violence underscores the struggle for communication, I think. The conflicts depicted are remarkably complex. With regret, I bow to the request, aware of the desire and ability to turn away.

I’ve been waiting to see if it was posted by anyone else because I feel REALLY white doing it, but I’m so amazed by it and the many, MANY reactions coming in that I thought y’all might want a look. It’s so powerful and disturbing and real while managing to be strangely beautiful that I can’t stop thinking about it.

It does bring up an interesting point about having the choice about what we see, even a fiction.

I don’t mean that critically.

People parsing it out, talking about their discomfort, about the stunning number of things missed on first viewing while we’re distracted by the music and the dance and the chaos. It’s a big part of the point.

The man shot isn’t, but is apparently designed to look like the father of Trayvon Martin. The choir echoes Charleston. The obsession with having things and being “pretty” helps to cope but causes problems too.

I find it incredibly rich.
