Police were dispatched to wrong Waffle House in shooting

Police dispatched to a mass shooting at a Tennessee Waffle House originally went to the breakfast joint’s other location 9 miles away.

Members of the Nashville police department listened to a dispatcher call all cars to 816 Murfreesboro Pike, which is not where gunman Travis Reinking killed four people last month before fleeing.

A timeline and recordings published by WKRN showed that officers first responded to that address instead of 3517 Murfreesboro Pike, far farther away from central Nashville on the same road.

Nashville police say that officers, who received the correct address after a minute and a half, arrived at the right Waffle House at 3:32 a.m., five minutes after the first car arrived at the other location, which police were reportedly more familiar with and has been open longer.

1. 9 miles away? I know of a WH location that is about 3/10ths of a mile

from another WH location. They are on opposite sides of a large highway at the same exit.

2. The limits of cell phones and 911.

Most 911 systems cannot give the exact address from a mobile call, that only works from land lines. If the call was interrupted before giving the address, there you go

3. Speaking as one who has 40 years in the communications business

Most cell phones are GPS capable. Likewise one can determine which cell site the call originated from.

Certainly knowing that it was a Waffle House I imagine the one nine miles away is not in the other cell site's range.

Then again I don't know how up to date Memphis's 911 equipment is.

In an emergency, every second counts. So the last thing a 911 dispatcher wants to waste time over is establishing the precise location of the caller, because in those vital, wasted seconds, lives can be lost.

In a bid to address the issue, Google has been testing its technology in conjunction with a number of 911 centers to develop a system that helps to automatically identify the precise location of someone calling from a cellphone, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Throughout December and January, Google hooked up with 911 centers in Texas, Tennessee, and Florida, allowing the dispatchers to use the tech giant’s data to pinpoint the location of individuals calling on mobile phones.

As the Journal points out, such data is usually provided by the wireless carriers, but it can be inaccurate, leading to slower response times. According to federal regulators, getting first responders to an emergency scene just 60 seconds earlier could save an estimated 10,000 lives a year.
