A military map has an overlaid grid, and the gridlines are one kilometer apart. (The standard map is 1:50,000 scale - 50 meters on the ground per millimeter on the map.) The ground enclosed by two vertical and two horizontal lines is called a "grid square." So, old sarge will tell young troop, "Private, go get me a box of grid squares." At Field Station Berlin, so many new guys got sent to get a box of grid squares our military police platoon cut up a map and put it in a box to loan to people who were sent looking for this very thing.

As for EMHO counts, war story follows. Field Station Berlin was divided into departments called Subsystems. Each shift was called a Watch, and our commander was the Watch Officer. When someone was chosen to perform the sacred duty of EMHO Counter, he (we generally didn't mess with the new female soldiers' heads too much) had to go to every subsystem for the day's EMHO count. He then had to add up the EMHO count, report to the Watch Officer and present the count to him. Well anyway, we got a new private and a new Watch Officer, CPT Howard Mohn, on the same day. Captain Mohn had been an armor officer for the first three years of his service. Anyway, he's sitting in the watch office learning his duties when the private walked in, reported the way they teach you in basic training (scaring the living shit out of CPT Mohn in the process), and presented the well-prepared, itemized EMHO count. The captain walked out to my section and asked, "does anyone know what an 'EMHO count' is?" I rolled back in my chair, turned around, and said in a clear and steady voice, "Sir, it means 'early morning hard-on.'"
When we really liked a guy and the weather was really nice, we would send him on Helicopter Watch. Take a look at the picture above. The big white thing that looks like a penis is 150 feet high and has a house door leading out onto the roof. The cover story was that FSB was a no-fly zone (which was true), the Soviet Army would overfly the site illegally (which was true in the 1970s, but so many of their pilots used the opportunity to defect they stopped doing it) and so we put a soldier on the roof to watch for encroachments of our airspace. In reality, we were just sticking the kid up there so he could watch the sun set over the Wannsee.
The best one of them all was Submarine Watch at Field Station Sinop, Turkey. Field Station Sinop was near the beach, so the new guy prank was to send the guy out to the beach with a pair of binoculars and a field radio, and orders to report any submarine activity that he saw. Of course, everyone knew there were no submarines in the Black Sea...which became interesting when a PFC who'd been in the Army all day saw one surface and start snorkeling to recharge her batteries. Turns out the Soviets had established a submarine squadron in the Black Sea under such tight security that no one knew it existed until someone sent on a wild goose chase discovered its existence. The aftermath was that submarine watch was a real duty for the next six months and the PFC received a Meritorious Service Medal.
I have just enough familiarity with the military that I could easily envision happenings just as you describe.
