Within the last 24 hours: Fox Business guest Ret. Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney (a birther and notorious crackpot) declares, The fact is, is John McCain, [torture] worked on John. Thats why they call him Songbird John'; White House aide Kelly Sadler says aloud at a White House meeting that McCains opposition to CIA nominee Gina Haspel doesnt matter because he is dying anyway; and White House chief of staff John F. Kelly, who has not fired Sadler, unleashes a bigoted, ignorant rant against immigrants.
Kelly had this exchange on NPR:
On the administrations recently announced zero tolerance policy that calls for separating families who cross the border illegally and prosecuting them:
Let me step back and tell you that the vast majority of the people that move illegally into United States are not bad people. Theyre not criminals. Theyre not MS-13. But theyre also not people that would easily assimilate into the United States, into our modern society. Theyre overwhelmingly rural people. In the countries they come from, fourth-, fifth-, sixth-grade educations are kind of the norm. They dont speak English; obviously thats a big thing. They dont integrate well; they dont have skills. Theyre not bad people. Theyre coming here for a reason. And I sympathize with the reason. But the laws are the laws. The big point is they elected to come illegally into the United States, and this is a technique that no one hopes will be used extensively or for very long.
Actually, current immigrants assimilate just as well as immigrant in past generations, according to a slew of data-rich studies. Most undocumented immigrants in the United States are not poor, uneducated people coming over the border. (Pew Research explains that as the number of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico declined, illegal immigration from other places, including Asia, increased.)
Immigrants who are here illegally are more likely to work (hence, they must have some job skills) than other groups.

(2,674 posts)We were just talking about this at breakfast today. Where are the people with moral principle and if they are there, why don't
they speak up and take a stand. Look at the Rev. Jeffers from my town, Dallas, going on fox News and verbally kissing Trump's ass.
What has been said of John McCain is shameful. He went through a lot for this country and should be treated with respect
Shame on Trump and his racist henchman, Jess Sessions for wanting to take the immigrant children from their mothers. So sad that this is happening in my country.

(82,849 posts)The more pertinent question in my mind is why the "liberal" media insists on recycling the same old tired voices of white men (even when those voices come out of the mouths of camera-ready young women) instead of giving time to the majority voices across the country. Why does the New York Times venture into the Pennsylvania hinterlands to interview Trump voters, but never quite gets around to talking with Clinton voters in New York or Illinois or Washington or New Mexico? There are, after all, more Clinton voters to talk to. About 3 million more.
