Almost a Darwin moment

How dumb and stupid are human beings? Can't we read signs. Who the fugg needs selfies with cheetahs?

<snip>
Terrifying footage filmed by a witness showed the French tourists being chased by the cheetahs after getting out of their car.

They were visiting Beekse Bergen, a drive-through African wildlife safari park in the southern Netherlands, where visitors are warned not to leave their cars.

But the family five appeared to ignore the instruction as footage showed the tourists getting out of the car twice during the safari.

You're right. Almost a Darwin. Happily, because I never root for those, they made it back to the car.

Pretty stupid move though.

Sure, it would have been tragic had they been caught and eaten, but they weren't, and the sight of these yahoos running across the hill with the cheetahs in pursuit was hilarious. It was like watching a Monty Python skit.

My thought is that the cheetahs were bored and looking for something to do. Given how fast a cheetah can move -- they can take down an antelope, for chrissakes -- those tourists weren't food, they were playthings. The big cats probably went back to their shade trees laughing their asses off.

Mom to husband: "We're not going to be able to outrun them!"

Husband: "I don't have to outrun them, I only have to outrun you!"

We don't have cheetahs but we do have bears--big bears with sharp teeth and devastating claws.

My husband and I were on a hike several years ago and watched a mother shove her little girl towards a baby bear so . . . she could get a photo. And of course, Mama Bear was immediately on the spot protecting her cub. Fortunately for this family, the bears went up a tree and the mother had time to grab her child before a tragedy (perfectly avoidable) occurred. My husband and I shouted a warning before Mama Bear showed up and the woman looked miffed as if we were spoiling a family moment.

I think people are so isolated from and ignorant about nature that they forget that the Wild is the Wild and all the creatures in it are equally Wild. We've been Disneyfied.

Encountered plenty of folks who didn’t understand that while Death Valley may be a park, it’s also not Disney World.
