his father a lot and very positively, his mother not at all. And yet, that hair, both of them carrying that general hairstyle around for decades.

I've read that people suffering from clinical narcissism often identify with an image they admire in youth and copy the look of that person for themselves for the rest of their lives. Notably, Elvis and Troy Donahue were both big glam stars when Trump was young, and he bears resemblance to both in features and chosen hairstyle, but it's impossible not to at least suspect that somehow Mother's in this too.
