Sen. Bernie Sanders To Announce Re-Election Plans Next Week

By BOB KINZEL • 51 MINUTES AGO

Sen. Bernie Sanders says he'll formally announce his re-election plans next week and says he has more to accomplish as a U.S. senator.

Campaign volunteers are in the process of collecting enough petition signatures to put him on the ballot in November as an independent candidate.

"I think we'll have something to say early next week, maybe Monday — and what I'll have to say I don't think will be a great surprise to anybody in the state of Vermont," Sanders told VPR on Thursday. "I am very proud to have represented Vermont for two terms in the U.S. Senate. I think we've accomplished a lot. Obviously there's a lot more that has to be done, and we look forward to doing it."

At this time, no Republican candidates have announced their intention to run for Sanders' Senate seat. However several independent candidates will be running.

I would love to see his announcement be that he plans to serve out a full Senate term if re-elected and don't plan to run for President again, but that is hoping for too much, I guess.

Because he has nothing new to say ever. He’s actually been saying the same 3 or 4 things since 1972– oligarchy, 1%, rigged system, Wall Street. Hasn’t done anything, just keeps repeating the mantra.

His presence in a Democratic primary will have no other function than being destructive, because each new generation of voters will think they’re hearing something new or promising and yet he can’t win a primary—he doesn’t have support in communities of color. His supporters will then mostly turn against the eventual nominee or stay home in the general. 2016 redux.

I’m with you—do us a favor and retire to your lake house, Mr. Sanders.

Wins pretty handily.

But even if he lost an election so did losers like Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson.

By contrast, the first time Donald Trump actually made it to election day, he won.

Not only was his 2016 crew a bunch of rank amateurs, they won't have the crutch of flogging the lifeless corpse of Hillary's political career anymore...

Had zero clue how to expand a coalition beyond the hardcore base, didn’t even bother trying. Just shoveled out rancid red meat to people who were already onboard.

Fortunately this announcement is about Bernie’s re-election as Senator for Vermont. Obviously he does a good job for the state, they keep re-electing him. That would be hard for weaver to screw up.

good measure -- no coronations. Let him talk about his actual record for Vermont. Run a Democrat.

11. Good. I'm all for him running for the Senate, just not for Pres. on the Dem ticket.

He ran for the Democratic nomination for president.

He did not run for president on the Democratic ticket, Hillary Clinton did.

He just didn't get out of the primaries with the nomination.

Thankfully there will be new, younger candidates running who are actually Democrats.
