NFL owners have joined together and unanimously condemned players who physically or sexually abuse women, and are promising fines and punishment for anyone guilty of assault.
Did I say assault? I'm sorry, I meant fucking kneeling.

(82,849 posts)I have to think this new requirement imposed by the owners is a change to the collective bargaining agreement, and needs to be voted on by the Players Association. Anyone versed in employment law have an opinion?

(9,527 posts)Sure the NFL had to be shamed into it. The NFL's move is stupid, but this supposed snark isn't actually valid.

(82 posts)First I don't have a problem with the players kneeling. I think the outrage is overplayed and dumb. Matter of fact, I don't even like that they play the National Anthem at sporting events. I guess I'm not patriotic.
But the outrage is real and the NFL owners as a business have a right to put rules in place to protect their business. No different than any other company. NBA has a rule in place.

(64,852 posts)There is credible evidence that the so-called drop in ratings was caused mostly by the current inability to accurately measure people watching the games in non-conventional methods, iow, streaming.
Because they are all privately held enterprises (except for the Packers), we don't really know if their bottom line was really affected.
In addition, the Panthers just sold for over 2.25 billion. The increase in value is part of the bottom line, so year over year revenues hardly tell the story about the true bottom line.
The Panthers were worth under $800 million several years back. Now, the franchise is worth 284.4% more. Even if over 10 years (and i don't believe it's quite that long), that's 11.1% per year yield on top of the operating income.
Those teams are still extremely profitable and this rule is a gross overreaction to numbers the owners and the league don't really understand.
And that "middleground" position is not popular! But this is a more complicated issue than "choose one side or the other."
Also, as an issue of importance... it ranks pretty damn low to me. It's divisive and destracting from real problems.
