Biden Unleashes On GOP In A Campaign-Style Speech That Should Terrify Trump
Former Vice President Joe Biden sounded a lot like a presidential candidate on Thursday, using a speech at the New York Democratic Party convention in Long Island to express outrage over what the country has become in the era of Donald Trump.
The former veep and potential 2020 candidate delivered a message that Democrats should run with: Values matter and Republicans have none.
This is not your fathers Republican Party, Biden said in the fiery speech, according to the Associated Press. They are not who we are. They are not who America is.
He said Republicans are sending a vision of America around the world that is distorted. That is damaging. That is hurting us.
Biden added: This phony populism, this fake nationalism Its time to say no more.'

On Thursday, Joe Biden made it clear that taking on Donald Trump and his Republican appeasers is about more than the same tired political arguments. Instead, its about what kind of values we want the United States to project to the world.
With Biden as a messenger, thats a contest Trump is likely to lose.

(99,710 posts)The irony is he looks better as a prospective candidate than as an actual candidate with his two presidential campaigns ending in disaster.
That being said we could do a lot worse.

(56,828 posts)Love the guy and would support him if he's the nominee, but would prefer somebody younger.
With the way the media is, if he makes one of his famous verbal gaffes on the campaign trail, it would be magnified 100x over compared to the garbage that Trump spews daily. Like the Hillary email scandal was played over and over and allowed people to focus on her one "BIG" scandal versus Trump's daily scandals that were each bigger than anything related to Clinton.

(56,828 posts)but, it's tough to go from the House to the presidency.
I like Warren as well, but also want that new blood. Democrats do well with smart, younger charismatic candidates - JFK, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama. They don't do as well with older and/or blander candidates - McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, Kerry.

(90 posts)Some of our younger crop is though...
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)so, has a long history of dirt to dig up on every vote he has taken in the senate.
I don't think either Cory Booker or Kamala Harris are bland. I'm sure I can come up with others as well.

(90 posts)It is my opinion of course, that, that will need to be an essential trait of our nominee.
Booker...s'alright. Harris...great AG. She gets elected to the Senate and immediately starts running for president.
Murphy, Merkley, Swalwell, Moulton, Gillibrand, Warren.... neeeeeeh.
Tim Ryan? Steve Bullock? Maybe. Remember, "punch him in the face."

(8,200 posts)He brings with him a heritage of service, sacrifice in addition to youth. I think Biden is magnificent, but I am for a younger man with knowledge of the younger people who must take control of the nation. I firmly believe that our country faces a threat of authoritarianism coupled with the oligarchs. Trump and his cadre are testing the climate with near dictatorial pronouncements and total disregard for the separation of powers. They are totally disregarding the authority of congress and using its lackeys for their own perpose.

(4,267 posts)He's smart, articulate and he's not afraid to take on anyone.
He should be one of the faces of the party. Officially and not unofficially.
"Cons": he's very young (only 37 I believe) and "still" in the House.
I like Ted Lieu (49) as well. If you guys ever have the chance to watch him speak, do it. He's funny, articulate and fearless.

(11,885 posts)I would support Biden or any Dem candidate , but we need a younger candidate, and one with more progressive policies, not like under President Obama that he didn't have. Possibly hurt Hillary also by not having better policies that Bernie's voters backed.

I would like to Kamala Harris somewhere on the ticket, though.
Bottom line: I'm voting Democratic in November and in 2020. If the Devil himself wants to try to prevent me from voting, he's gonna need to pack a lunch, that's all I'm saying.

Yes, we MUST win!
authentic, tough, intelligent, charming!!!
I keep track of everyone making trips to Iowa and New Hampshire.
What I like about Biden is, he unites us. I haven't met, well, any Dems so far who aren't fans of Joe.
Be on the watch for MT Gov. Steve Bullock and IL Rep. Cheri Bustos... very formidable in my opinion. The two Ohioans, Tim Ryan and Sherrod Brown, are strong too.
I won't slander any possible candidates. I think I like at least something about all friggin 70 of them who seem like they have expressed interest! I only have a serious problem with one... I will absolutely vote for the DEMOCRATIC nominee though. I emphasize that word for a reason...

(11,726 posts)That is a funny line. I was born in the 70's and remember growing up in the 80's under Reagan. My dad was a Republican, mainly because Nixon had gotten the US out of the war, and his treachery in stopping Johnson from doing it sooner had not been revealed yet. Reagan was a "feel good" president. After the bloody noses of Vietnam and the Oil Embargo, where the US was not feeling like a Superpower, Reagan came along and blew sunshine up our asses. In the meantime, that wolf in sheep's clothing was gutting the New Deal, shifting the tax burden from those who gained most from the economy, to those who actually produced the goods and used them to grow the economy. He began the "Borrow and Spend" mentality while attacking Democrats for "Tax & Spend".
So my response to Biden (who I like) is. "It most certainly is my father's Republican Party!!" Trump is the cartoonish embodiment of the only place where the Republican Party, transformed by Reagan, could have ended up. Hyper-partisan, jingoistic, greedy, demeaning to Labor, demeaning to women, demeaning to immigrants, in bed with the wealthy. That is EXACTLY what the Republican party was in the 70's and 80's and what it is now. Biden remembers fighting with people like Jack Kemp and Bob Dole, then going out for cocktails afterword, which is why the nostalgia. However, people like Gingrich, Hastert, DeLay, Ryan, Boehner, McConnell, Rove, and Cheney took the Republican party to its logical end... a greedy, nationalistic, megalomaniac like Trump, who plays on fear and contempt to gain the support of scared White people.
That is the Republican Party I remember as a kid.
