A long drive last night served as a depressing reminder about the state of our media.

As many have pointed out before, we are getting our asses kicked when it comes to media. As my wife and I drove a long distance last night, we were reminded that right wing and religious nuts dominate the radio airwaves.

And then you turn to the television infotainment industry with its penchant for promoting false equivalencies and the notion that all statements are equally valid opinions worthy of airtime (no facts, no falsehoods, only opinions).

Add to all that the Russian infiltration and it's hard to feel hopeful.

If someone like Warren Buffet wants to truly make a difference, he'll invest in changing the media landscape.

I think there are right wing outlets that lose money, but their benefactors don't care so long as it pays dividends when it comes to public policy (getting rubes to go along with tax cuts).

There needs to be a left wing media empire that is okay with losing money.

Also local unions are sponsoring so that helps here but it's not just tuning in . It needs support through sponsors who see results from thier advertising .

You can listen on line although some shows are very local so check the line up

Right now I'm listening to a radio Saturday music show on another local station
but I frequently have on our progressive talk station when working , driving etc

WCPT is one of the last independently owned radio stations in the country! We are not part of a conglomerate, and our hosts have the freedom to speak their minds and offer opinions from all points on the progressive spectrum. These progressive voices work hard to keep you entertained and informed every day! From all of us at WCPT, thank you for supporting Chicago’s Progressive Talk, Where Facts Matter!

We are committed to providing our listeners with an alternative to the “status quo” of talk radio, and to providing our advertisers with an effective and results oriented product.

Air America didn't own the stations. They were being broadcast on stations mostly owned by ClearChannel and Cumulus.

AA was often put on the dog stations and weak signal stations that often couldn't even cover a small city.
It is kind of a long story but for the most CC or Cumulus cared not one whit about AA. AA also had their own problems with finances. The cost of running the AA package (and it was sold as a package) was expensive compared to Limbaugh, Hannity and the others.

CC was leveraged by Bain and thus ended any liberal stations in the CC world. I think Cumulus also got leveraged. Many of the former AA stations became all sports, Hispanic or even Christian stations.

There are a few surviving stations that play the likes of Them Hartmann and Stephanie Miller etc. such as KTNF in Minneapolis and WCPT in Chicago. Those are owned by liberals and do fairly well.

In some cities like Washington DC, Los Angeles and Boston AA did pretty well. Didn't matter.

At least that was my recollection.

where we listen to KTNF and BBC mostly.

In our area - Quad Cities - Franken was beating Limbaugh head to head - but the station was a really weak signal. Then one day with almost no notice the AA station became a Hispanic religious station.

I don't really want to go into detail, but AA went down for a myriad of reasons, not just low audiences. Low audiences were a factor in some areas.
