JUDGES BEFORE THE AUGUST RECESS. WE HAVE TO STOP THEM NOW. IF IT APPEARS I'M SHOUTING, I AM. WE CAN'T WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE MIDTERM ELECTIONS. IF WE WIN THE SENATE, THOSE 20 APPEALS COURT JUDGES ARE OURS TO APPOINT, NOT THEIRS. CALL YOUR SENATOR AND LET THEM KNOW. NO MORE JUDICIAL CONFIRMATIONS FOR ANY COURTS. SENATOR CORNYN TOLD HUGH HEWITT THIS MORNING THEY HAVE 20 GORSICH-TYPE NOMINEES READY TO GO, MEANING THEY ARE YOUNG, AND WILL SERVE IF CONFIRMED, FOR A LIFETIME.

(42,307 posts)I agree, this is a crisis. HRC and other Dems warned about this, but some were more interested in "voting their conscience," or not voting at all because they weren't excited.
Rs hold the Senate. McConnell changes the rules. Those nominees will get in and, yes, we will pay for it for the next 40 years.

(37,648 posts)The Democrats don't have much power. But I hope they'll do what they can. We're all getting worn down, though. You have to pick your fights.
If there's a plan to stop the confirmations, please let us know.

(3,335 posts)Write them or call them and tell them to slow walk the process as much as possible. Hugh Hewitt asked Sen Cornyn this morning on the Hugh Hewitt Show to promise him that he will get it done before the August recess. Sen Cornyn said that it's up to Sen Schummer how quickly they get it done since they all want to get out of town so they can go campaign for office. So we need to contact our Senator's and tell them to slow it down and not allow them to rush these nominations through just to get home and campaign. We may not be able to stop all of them but we can slow down the process, and shouldn't help them speed up the process just so they can adjourn and go home.

(3,335 posts)long as possible according to the Senate rules. Senator Cornyn thinks that it will go quickly if the members of Congress want to get home sooner rather than later in order to campaign. My thought is that they shouldn't allow themselves to be rushed through the process. Only a third of Senator's are running for office at any one time, unlike House members. So all the Senator's shouldn't be in a rush to get home to campaign. Remember these are lifetime appointments.

(7,627 posts)The president nominates them, not the senate. Now, of course we would be able to deny them the appointment.
I am not sure how the democrats can stop them. May be some procedural maneuvers to gum the works enough that they can't do it until november.

(58,785 posts)And if you can't find one, I strongly suggest directing your shouting to the nearest non-voter. If any are in your house, maybe punch a hole in the wall to make your point.
But suggest not bothering our poor senators. If they don't know everything there is to know about this, including what they can and cannot do without the power feckless, betraying Democrats and independents gave Republicans instead (!!!!!), they're each dumber than a dozen bags of rocks.
But they're not, and for sure they are already sick right up to their bald spots with all the people who betrayed their own responsibilities and then blame them.

(1,216 posts)Which means we have to give voters really good reasons to vote for democratic candidates and win hearts and minds. Simply opposing republicans for sake of opposition might not be effective.

(3,608 posts)why others do or even care. But anyway...I'm calling my Senators again about this immigration bullshit so I will certainly throw that in. Got right through too the Senators office so we all need to start calling calling calling. Does not take long.

(5,586 posts)They will have the biggest set of court appointments during the lame duck session you have ever seen. They'll strip all the rules, and have hundreds of votes in December and early January.

(22,114 posts)are very aware of these confirmations etc. We do have the wise words of the constitution to protect us, fortunately and hopefully they'll use in full force against these dictatorial actions. What's happening to the repugs will come back to bite them, because they seem to be concentrating on 'moral issues' from a legislative basis, which leads to lots of problems in the future, being that attempting to write laws for such things tend to be overly generic and thus not enforceable, due to the vague language in the legislative attempts.
They're finding a variety of groups now opposing the repugs in their attempts (businesses against rabid immigration attempts, tax law of 2018 biased towards the ultra rich and corporations (and people are realizing what's really happening to the results of this tax law). Businesses are using the money to buy themselves back, not plow into increased salaries or hourly rates. Stock market is going to hugely inflated and all it is going to take to tumble the dominoes is 1 big event to shake the stock market for a massive correction.

(56,828 posts)I say that not one judge should be confirmed at ANY level - not the Supreme Court, nor any federal court below that.
Not just as revenge for Garland, but because Team Trump is going to be under MULTIPLE investigations if Democrats can win back both houses.

(332 posts)"Constitutional" Chuck Grassley held unprecedented amounts of Federal Judgeships open for just under a decade. Did the Party leadership use this stonewalling as a campaign issue? Not to my knowledge.
Trump is a joke; and the Republicans have used his distractions to pass truly heinous legislation.
Yet he does have one singular accomplishment; he has packed the Federal courts with right wing ideologues for a generation and a half.
