IMO, "Bombs bursting in air" is hardly the way to show respect and compassion for the lives lost under fire. It enrages me each year as my town continues to resort to the fireworks ritual. It's supposed to be a solemn day, not one of celebration, and what of those who suffer from PTSD and other war-related traumas? Shameful, I say.

(62,406 posts)In any case, I agree. Enough with the fireworks and all that crap.
In a crowded place these days some may think it is gunfire and we may have a lot of "good guys with guns" shooting innocent people. Enough already.

(10,885 posts)I live in New England, and there are many towns nearby that "honor" our war dead with pyrotechnics each year. Please understand, I have no problem with July 4th fireworks or any other time when they're appropriate. It just seems to me that Memorial Day and Veterans' Day aren't in that category.

(62,406 posts)Thanks for the education. Have heard of some 21 gun salutes.
I am still in favor of just doing away with fireworks.

(51,584 posts)and we are very patriotic and have founding fathers and history coming at us all the time and even have fireworks on July 3rd sometimes, but I never saw any on Memorial Day when I lived in that area.

you'll see them this year.
From their blog:
And what would Memorial Day be without fireworks? Dont miss special holiday fireworks shows along the Delaware River waterfront and at Longwood Gardens.

Harrisburg, Lancaster, many others in PA will have them also.

(51,584 posts)How did I miss them since I am a a huge fireworks lover? I wonder if this was going on while I lived there and was not informed or did this start after I moved away in 1984? I just asked my mom and sister they said they never heard about this either.

(10,885 posts)but they're certainly not unique to this area.
Note that I already posted about PA above, but a few others just as examples:
Washington, D.C. https://allsparkfireworks.com/Memorial-Day-Fireworks.html
Ceremonies and special events abound in every corner of the country, from coast to coast. Of course, our nations capitol is a focal point for Memorial Day fireworks and events and the National Memorial Day Concert is one of the most popular venues. This free concert and Memorial Day fireworks show is on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and features appearances by dignitaries, actors and musical guests. Nearby in Virginia at Wolf Trap Farm Park, there are Memorial Day fireworks at Summer Blast Off: The Presidents Own. This park for performing arts pays tribute to the day with a performance by the U.S. Marine Band followed by a spectacular Memorial Day fireworks display

Boston, thankfully, treats this as a solemn holiday and purposely does not offer fireworks. However, many of the suburban towns, such as where I live, have them every year.

(21,646 posts)Wednesday as your link shows through our summer season, which traditionally starts on the Memorial Day weekend and ends on Labor Day weekend .
The city has a large Memorial Day parade which honors all men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country

(8,329 posts)This write up is wrong. It is a cross between the Memorial Day and July 4th concert. I will be on the west front of the US Capitol tomorrow night to watch the show. I have been there in some capacity for the past 25 years. There have never been fireworks. I will watch tomorrow night, but have sen the tictock ( timeline) and there are no fireworks scheduled

(90 posts)I'm absolutely with you. Save the 'splosions for July 4.
And of course, Groundhog Day.

(1,332 posts)In Michigan the idiot republicans passed a law that said you can let off fireworks the day before, the day of, and the day after, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and maybe more. Of course if a holiday falls on a weekend its every person for himself. They are supposed to stop at midnight and of course they dont. We have had, and continue to have dogs who are traumatized by the fireworks. The cops dont care. All to make money which they could make threefold if they would pass legalization of marijuana. Of course the DeVos dont like pot, so even if it passes they and the republicans will find a way to block it.

(15,536 posts)Once they started that (and I do believe the law says any holiday) it's nonstop fireworks and very few people abide by the law. It's pretty disgusting. I live in a senior community and some of the seniors with dementia are traumatized by it also. Anyone with a dog cannot enjoy it at all.
