Even though it is legal for women and men to go topless in New York. And she was wearing pasties.

Cops who had fielded previous complaints about Igoes topless yard work simply advised her to cover her nipples, so she bought pasties.
She was wearing them when the priggish passerby snapped a picture of her watering her plants, according to the federal lawsuit.
Before long the prude patrol showed up in the form of Village of Red Hook Officer Travis Sterritt, who arrested Igoe.
Like many people, including millions of men, she prefers to be topless in the summer heat while performing work outdoors, Igoe claimed in court papers filed in White Plains federal court against Red Hook, where she lives, and Sterritt, over the August incident. She seeks unspecified damages.
A judge dismissed the charges against Igoe; its been legal in New York state for woman to be topless in public since 1992, when two female activists challenged the states public lewdness law in court.

(58,724 posts)That's her most recent tweet. Guess things worked out OK for her.
It was a good interview. Comcast viewers can catch it "on demand" under Today Show, then Megyn Kelly.
This lady is no sex symbol. She's just a regular person.
I don't debate her right to do this and I'm happy she's suing over this ridiculous harassment from the police, but I question her wanting to be topless. It's not safe to be out in the sun without plenty of suntan lotion, and the breasts are an area of the body that has very delicate skin. The best thing gardeners can do is cover up with clothing and suntan lotion. A big hat, which covers the neck and shades the face is also good.
Also suntan lotion has to be applied every two hours and should be at least spf30 for outdoor work.

(21,737 posts)For example, during the very conservative American era of Prohibition, the "style" for women was to flatten their breasts with wraps and cover their bosoms. When the more liberal era of the Depression years came along, the breasts were emphasized with support bras and cleavage was in style.
Jung attributed this to matrist v patrist societies. In societies where women are respected and have power, the emphasis of their breasts is allowed, even celebrated. In patrist societies, women are expected to be publicly "modest".
The matrist v patrist model also correlates with liberal v conservative. As we are moving back to a patrist society where the dominant male is most valued, "issues" such as birth control, sexual mores and gender are revived.

(13,081 posts)Oh, the horror! I can see society collapsing around us already. How dare that woman possess nipples and allow people to see them! Who does she think she is? Male? Ridiculous!

(146,284 posts)For some reason, our skin suits are not to be seen by anyone, except doctors and intimate partners. And yet, we're all born in them and wear them until we're dead and gone. For some odd reason, it's OK for men and boys to appear without coverings on their torsos, but not for women and girls to do the same.
In New York, it went to court and that court decided that "fair is fair," and that discrimination based on sex was not legal. So, women in that state, if they wish, can go without their torsos being covered by cloth. Most choose not to do that. Some go ahead and bare their skin. Nobody is required to stare at them, though.
From the waist up, men and women, girls and boys, all have the very same parts. Anatomically, we're all alike from the waist up. We're mammals, and all mammals, male and female, have nipples. That's why we're called mammals, for goodness' sake. Everyone looks a little different, of course. Adult women tend to have more development of breast tissues than men. That changes somewhat, as we get older, at least for many men, who seem to enlarge in those areas as testosterone levels fall. So what?
If you encounter a person without a shirt and it offends or titillates you for some reason, just look in another direction. If your children point and exclaim about some adult woman with her breasts exposed, use it as a learning opportunity and teach them to look in another direction.
We're all the same from the waist up, for Pete's sake!
