LOS ANGELES Devin Nunes, the California congressman whose allegiance to Donald Trump has made him public enemy number one to many Democrats, is beginning to feel the heat back home.
His little-known challenger is awash in cash from across the country as a result of Nunes polarizing role in the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. An independent expenditure campaign has posted hostile billboards along Highway 99, the heavily traveled main road through Nunes Central Valley district.
On Wednesday, a report in the Fresno Bee linked Nunes to a winery that allegedly held a wild cocaine-and-prostitutes evening yacht cruise a winery where the congressman is a part-owner.
Yet Nunes isnt blinking. In response to the first real challenge of his career, the House Intelligence Committee chairman recently raised a dizzying $2.3 million in just over six weeks nearly as much as he raised in his entire 2016 campaign.

and not the news spinners. Does anyone know of actual constituents in his district and what the general consensus is there?

(22,005 posts)Which is his district. Its a weird part of CA, politically. A Rethuglican stronghold, where big agriculture rules. I don't recall meeting a single Dem the 12 years I lived there. Lots of apathy.

that's an issue that matters there and should be a focus in campaigns not just Russia that they dont get or care about.
Talk about their hit in the wallet

(90,556 posts)...ran an in-depth article some weeks back about Nunes' rural constituents really not getting how Russia affects them. They are the farm-owners, and they are worried about drought and about whether they will get State water piped in to irrigate their crops. The Central Valley is literally sinking as ground water has been pumped so extensively. What does Russia have to do with them, right?
The question for the rest of us is: how can Democrats frame the issues to his constituents in a way that makes clear just how badly the Trump/Nunes corruption affects their livelihood? For instance, Trump's crazy talk about tariffs and trade wars will affect them very personally, and soon. Is the Democratic candidate addressing this?

(6,543 posts)You would think that they could see this by themselves. I don't get how people can ignore things that affect them directly and then vote against their self interest.

As a well known feminist said, "All politics is local." Especially in the US House -- the majority of people squawking about Nunes and Pelosi can't vote for them. The people here who fantasize about all of California being like Nancy Pelosi's district (and how easy it would be to replace her) are blowing smoke.

(22,005 posts)That would certainly get big ag's attention, (like the Boswells). I would surmise they have some major deal with Nunez to keep ICE out. The Central Valley's economy depends on migrant workers.

Responded Nunes: Your paper is a joke to even bring these issues up or raise these issues.

(7,391 posts)Oh, certainly not from fronts for Russians. Oh no. Not that. Surely not that.
Devin Nunes needs to sit and think about his life for the rest of his life inside a cell.
Traitor-style.

(476 posts)That Nunes is raking in the cash. Millions of Americans love him and his antics... and those millions won't disappear even if he loses....they'll fight for someone as insane to replace him in a few years.... the core of the problem will still be there, because...well...because Americans are extremely prone to conspiracy theories and partisan wilful delusions.

(144,919 posts)Nunes is relying on contributions from out of district https://politicalwire.com/2018/05/27/nunes-raised-almost-no-money-from-his-constituents/
Of the more than $1 million Nunes raised from individual donors, roughly $19,000, or 2 percent, came from people in his district, which includes chunks of Fresno and Tulare Counties. Thats the smallest percentage of any the eight California Republicans in Congress who Democrats are targeting for defeat this fall.
