DALLAS (AP) The Latest on Gov. Greg Abbotts plan to improve school safety following the deadly shooting at a Texas high school (all times local):
2:15 p.m.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbotts recommendations on improving school safety DO NOT include any major restrictions on guns in the state.
The plan unveiled Wednesday by Abbott includes dozens of recommendations on topics including security at schools, mental health, crime prevention efforts and firearm safety.
Abbott is proposing a change to the state law that says guns cant be made accessible to children under 17, with exceptions such as hunting or parent supervision.
Hes encouraging the Legislature to consider changing the age to include 17-year-olds.
2:30 p.m.
Many of Texas Gov. Greg Abbotts recommendations on how to improve school safety revolve around increasing security at schools and mental health awareness.
Among recommendations Abbott revealed Wednesday are that campuses by hardened by actions that could include creating vestibules where doors must by remotely unlocked before visitors can enter, installing metal detectors and having an alarm that would signal theres an active shooter.
He also suggested the Legislature consider requiring the Texas Education Agency to create a formal review process of school districts safety audits.
Other recommendations included training more teachers and school employees to carry handguns on campus.
Abbott is also recommending an expansion of a program that identifies students at risk of committing violence and provides help for them.
He also wants to increase the number of people trained to identify signs of mental illness and increase awareness of a state system that allows people to report people who may be a threat and suspicious activity.

(50,261 posts)back yards, four-lane highways, flea markets, hospitals, clothing stores, etc., etc., etc. I'm happy they're thinking about protecting the kids (even if I disagree with their proposals), but what about everyone who isn't in the armed encampment known as the local middle school?????? 5,842 deaths so far this year.

(6,288 posts)Guess this is one way to hasten the demise of public schools.
I've heard a lot of people who were always strong advocates for public schools saying, they have had enough & are willing to "buy" a safer education for their kids, thru charter or private.
Sucks

(31,261 posts)killing will start happening at them. There are 49 million k-12 kids in public schools, around 3.8 million in private or charter schools. Public schools can't turn away a kid. Once private and charter schools start taking more kids, the quiet kid whose parents are gun nuts will start going to school at private and charter schools, and deadly shooting will follow.
Half assed solutions to a problem never work. The parents who think they can buy a safe education for their kids instead of pushing for sane control on some types of guns, will get a call on day letting them know that their kid may have been slaughtered while at the private school, or while sitting in a university lecture hall, or while eating a meal, or while shopping, or while driving on a busy public road, or ect, ect.

(11,885 posts)And all Republicans along with him to ever get gun laws changed adequately. Full background checks for everyone, and a ban on assault weapons and giant clips, that will will reduce the numbers in mass murders, as long as that's not enacted, and they have the proof to show it , and still refuse to enact these laws and restrictions. If they don't enact full background checks because of the loopholes how can they address mental illness individuals from getting weapons.

(58,785 posts)No matter what he claims, it's meant to lead to a wind-down of government expenditure and responsibility. Republican governor + mental health ID would likely lead to kicking kids out of school system, revving up their school-to-streets and school-to-prison pipelines.
