Double Standard, Republicans?
In the wake of Roseanne’s racist remarks and the subsequent cancellation of her show, the argument I’ve heard from Republicans is that there is a double standard at play, and that liberals have not suffered the same consequences for their anti-Trump remarks.
Well, allow me explain what a double standard really looks like, and how it works.
Republicans screamed like scorched cats when Obama stated that some citizens cling to their religion and their guns. They were silent when Trump called Mexicans drug-smuggling rapists, called black athletes “sons of bitches” for taking a knee, and labelled entire nations as “shithole countries”
Republicans carried on like crazed banshees when Obama stated that Obamacare participants could keep their own doctors, and that turned out not to be the case. And yet no Republican will speak out against Trump’s lies – lies that are so frequent, they average over six per day.
Republicans repeatedly called Obama divisive – the same Republicans who now sit silent while Trump repeatedly makes statements and touts policies that divide the citizenry, and pit one citizen against the other. He’s even gone so far as to encourage violence between his supporters at his rallies and those who refuse to drink his kool-aide.
As for Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ statement today that there are those in the media who have said “horrible things” about Trump without facing any negative consequences, the truth – which Ms. Sanders seems to have as much trouble with as her employer – is that the facts speak for themselves.
Yes, people in the media have called Trump a liar – because he is one, and that point has been proven beyond all doubt. They call him unhinged – because he acts like he is. They call him ignorant of how government works – because he demonstrates that ignorance on a daily basis. They call him a racist – because he described white supremacists in Charlottesville as “very fine people”. They call him a misogynist – because he bragged about grabbing women by their genitalia. They call him stupid – because his statements and tweets reflect a complete lack of intelligence, or even basic common sense.
The irony of Republicans complaining that their “pResident” has had horrible things said about him is beyond astounding. Many of them are the same Republicans who promoted the idea that Obama was not a citizen, but a “secret Muslim” bent on instituting Sharia law in the US. Many of them are the same Republicans who spread every ludicrous – and completely debunked – lie about Obama as though it were fact.
So spare me the “double standard” argument from people who have applied a double standard for decades, and continue to do so. Republicans, of all people, are in no position to claim unfair treatment of their “pResident” when they themselves have openly participated in maligning Obama, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and hundreds of other Democrats, often based on outright lies or ridiculous rumours they know to be without substance.
So cry me a fuckin’ river, Republicans. If you didn’t want the media to point out that your “pResident” is a lying racist with the intelligence of a house-plant, the manners of a pig, and the maturity of a two-year-old, you shouldn’t have elected a man who is the very personification of that description.
