NOFX Jokes About Tragic Las Vegas Shooting: 'At Least They Were Country Fans'

NOFX are hardly strangers to tasteless comments and creative choices. Back in 2015, they included a photo of Bill Cosby on their all-access passes at Fat Wreck Chord's anniversary shows.

The most recent eyebrow-raising remarks took place at their Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival set in Las Vegas on Sunday (May 27). In a video posted to Twitter by radio station X1075's Dave Farra and Jason Mahoney, Fat Mike and guitarist Eric Melvin partake in some offensive banter over the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas on October 1 that left 59 people dead and hundreds of other injured.

"We played a song about Muslims and we didn’t get shot. Hooray," Fat Mike says, to which Melvin responds, “I guess you only get shot in Vegas if you are in a country band.”

"At least they were country fans and not punk rock fans," Fat Mike announces, much to the disdain of the audience. "You were all thinking it!" he defended himself with.

Yeah I'm done with NOFX. This crossed a line, and if I was at that show, I would have left.

signed to it.

On the one hand, it's a pretty 'punk rock' thing to say.

On the other, it's not 1982, and his last name ain't Biaffra, Rotten, Pop, or Ramone.

Despite his relative fame (even though you don't know of him, or the group ... many who are fans of genre do, believe me) ... it's not sufficient in today's environment in particular ... to get away with talking this kind of insensitive shit.

Esp. considering that a surprising number of Punk fans ... are actually totally right-wing by today's standards.

There are many things I don't know of.. not as much in the loop as earlier years.

Struck me as a heartless super insensitive thing to say.. I would be crushed if I had a loved one who died in the Las Vegas massacre.

It happened when I was on a 5 month news black out.. I only found out about it a couple of months ago.

I was a fan for a long time and I have seen them live a few times but after this.... yeah I can't do it anymore. And that thing about separating the art from the artist? This is who Fat Mike is. Same with Eagles Of Death Metal - you can't reason with people who make such horribly insensitive comments like this.

4. NOFX Lose Beer Sponsorship After Joking About Tragic Las Vegas Shooting

Stone Brewing Co.—the San Diego Brewery behind NOFX’s beer and music festival both called Punk in Drublic—has now distanced itself from the band, The Blast reports. “We at Stone Brewing are aware of NOFX’s insensitive and indefensible statements this past weekend. As a result, we are severing all our ties with NOFX, including festival sponsorship and the production of our collaboration beer,” a representative for the company said in a statement.

The brewery announced its intentions to donate profits from NOFX’s beer to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation—an organization that provides trauma counseling for officers and first responders.
