Arrived in Tornillo TX where first tent city for kids has gone up. Was refused entrance by HHS. Given amount of misinformation and conflicting info coming from Trump Admin, its critical that Congress and American public know exactly how these children are treated by our system.

Keep going, we need some secret camera work in there.

(9,651 posts)what is happening now to immigrants is horrid but politicians like freaking kennedy have been all too happy to separate and incarcerate families in the "war on drugs" for decades now
he is no hero

(1,117 posts)Kennedy and his family have fought the war on drugs really the war on black people for years.
Remember who fueled the War On Drugs/Minorities - REPUBLICANS.
George Bush Sr.
Reagan (young bucks)
And Richard Nixon
Were all prominent supporters of that War.
If you want to stop the war on minorities the first order of business is voting Republicans out of office.
Remember what Nixons aide Ehrlichman said:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2016/03/23/politics/john-ehrlichman-richard-nixon-drug-war-blacks-hippie/index.html
"You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities," Ehrlichman said. "We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."
That was a REPUBLICAN.
Know who is hurting you: Republicans.

(15,642 posts)federal government and knowing how responsive federal agencies are to Congressionals, this is like being in another world to me. My experience was 180 degrees different; we bent over backwards to accommodate federal legislators AND their staff. HHS is obviously very aware of how reprehensible this program is.

Crash2Parties
(6,017 posts)We have no checks & balances anymore between parties & only the barest scraping between the Judicial & Exec + Legislative. And that Judicial check is growing weaker every time the GOP seats another judge to a seat they blocked filling for years during the Obama admin.
This is a coup. Not openly violent by the military, but a takeover of our government that results in violence none the less.

(33,643 posts)They should be HIGHLY responsible for establishing the highest possible level of screening measures, and they should be made to report to the local CPS agencies each and every case where a child is NOT being placed with a parent or grandparent, and all such kids should be tracked in accordance with the applicable laws in the areas in which they are sent.
Basically any kid not sent to live with a known, verifiable CLOSE relative should be tracked by local authorities just like if they were any other kid not living with parent/grandparent. If they're essentially 'foster kids' then they should be tracked like any other foster kids, by the state they're living in.
I don't personally like the idea of the Federal government and esp. not the 'border' authorities ... being in charge of this function. Once they're accepted into this country and given official asylum/citizenship, they should be treated henceforth just like any other child in the USA.
AFAIC, ORR should do everything possible to put them in proper homes, let the local authorities know that they're there so they can tracked if appropriate, and then more or less forget they existed. They're not in their purview any longer, they're just American kids, like any other.
Just MHO, fwiw ...

(10,270 posts)Congress is a COEQUAL branch of government, and they've abdicated so much Power over to the Executive Branch that they're not ALLOWED to go somewhere that they paid for ON OUR BEHALF???. Nah. Homie don't play dat.
Congress needs to start breaking executive branch balls and re exerting their own legit Power. If a deputized member of The Judiciary (ANY JUDICIARY, AT ANY LEVEL) had been told no or refused entry on Court business, I can PROMISE you, that relevant Court would crack some fuckin beauracratic heads open. THIS kinda shit is why the other problem exists in the first place: Congress CANNOT be worthless.

DFW
(54,341 posts)He was drafted into the German army during World War Two and sent to the Russian front. Thia family is from a small town near Osnabrück. One time, on leave back home, he and a few friends heard about a big installation not far from where they lived, but never allowed anyone in or out without special authorization. They decided to take a look, so the walked the few kilometers to where it was supposed to be.
Sure enough, after a while, they came to a huge installation surrounded by several layers of high barbed wire fences and lots of guard posts. They went up to a guard near the outside and asked what the place was.
The guard told them, "once you are in here, you stay in here. Forget you asked, forget you ever saw this place, and go back to where you came from right now."
After the war, our friend's father, who managed to survive, found out what the place was. It was the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
It sounds like Sessions is trying to set up similar installations in the good old USA. Keeping people out may be feasible, but keeping these places quiet in the age of drones, cell phones and the internet will not be in the cards. If Trump and Sessions are looking to be charged with crimes against humanity before the Hague Tribunal, they are well on their way, and I doubt that the next Democratic administration will be willing to keep such proceedings "off the table." Not this time.
