I think I get some Trump voters now...
I have a good friend who is a Trump voter.
He is a Desert Storm vet, married going on 30 years.
He raised 3 daughters who adore him.
An avid bowhunter, an expert welder.
A native American who struggles with some of the same issues I do, his stemming most likely from his wartime experiences.
I also struggle to understand what makes decent, hardworking people vote for someone like Trump.
I think I got my answer.
A couple days ago, "Ray" sent me this message...
"ATTN: this goes out to all my family, program friends, & co-workers alike: P L E A S E R E A D A L L !!
This was on the FOX 9:00 o'clock News the other night, and this works. THIS OPPORTUNITY ALSO TOOK UP TWO FULL PAGES OF THE TUESDAY EDITION OF USA TODAY - IT IS FOR REAL!! PLEEEEEEASE READ, it was on the news. This thing is for real. Rest assured, AOL and Intel will follow through with their promises for fear of facing a multimillion-dollar class-action suit, similar to the one filed by PepsiCo against General Electric not too long ago. Dear friends: please do not take this for a junk letter. Bill Gates is sharing his fortune. If you ignore this, you will repent later. Microsoft and AOL are now the largest Internet companies, and in an effort to make sure that Internet Explorer remains the most widely used search engine program, Microsoft and AOL are running an e-mail beta test. When you forward this e-mail to friends, Microsoft can and will track it (if you are a Microsoft Windows user?) For a two-week time period, for every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you $245.00. For every person that you sent it to, that forwards it on, Microsoft will pay you $243.00, and for every third person that receives it, you will be paid $241.00. Within two weeks, Microsoft will contact you for your address, and then send you a check.

I thought this was a scam myself, but two weeks after receiving this e-mail and forwarding it on, Microsoft contacted me for my address, and within days, I received a check for $24,800.00. You need
to respond before the beta testing is over. If anyone can afford this, Bill gates is the man. It's all marketing expenses to him. Please forward this to as many
people as possible.
Thank you, and peace and plenty!"
I didn't answer "Ray", but sent him a thumbs up, as I didn't want to hurt his feelings.
Yesterday I got this from "Ray"...
"It's fake someone just told me. Sorry just wanted it to be true and pass it to you. Sorry"
my reply...
"It's o.k., Ray. We all do that sometimes! Have a great day! 😀😆"
From "Ray"...
"You too".
It happens to us all.

I think the child abductions at the border are having that effect.

(31,261 posts)And stop the stupidity and flirting with questionable third parties, there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of him getting reelected. If the internal fighting and petulant behavior that happened in 2016 takes place, then we get into a close race that we can potentially lose. Trump has a hard 30% that are with him no matter what, there is a hard 35-45% that oppose him no matter what, the ones in the middle can be influenced, but if they see us throwing knives at each other, they may say why bother.

"So is Trump a fake! Don't get fooled again!"
That Kurt Andersen book Fantasyland suggests that a large swath of Americans are exceptionally prone to hucksterism and don't learn from their experience.

(836 posts)I see the dumbest, most obviously fake/false memes posted as fact on fb. That anyone could fall for this BS boggles my mind.
And yes, the vast majority of posters are trumpers.

(9,657 posts)I have some extended family who are trumpers and they used to send those same weird, chainy emails: "Don't break the chain. Pass it on and you will be rewarded. Bad luck if you don't. Proven results. Guaranteed. etc."
My lefty family and friends? Never. Nada. Zip. I just don't get that stuff from them. What's the difference? Don't know. Some folks hope and some folks think and hope, I guess.

(58,605 posts)Someone that I hadn't contacted for a couple of years "forwarded" some thing that said "just send your info and they'll send you a box of money." Yeah, real cash money. She apparently got $10,000.
Of course, I ignored it. I was tempted to send her an angry message, but I abstained. A few days later, the lady sent out a message that she'd been hacked. Of course, the ability to mine personal data off of FB is pretty low-level "hacking."

(17,984 posts)Is that the tRump voter believes the scam wholeheartedly and doesn't need to have his/her FB account hacked to forward the scam on to his/her friends and family; the normal person is aware that the world is not a safe place and refuses to be taken for a fool.
It's sad really. It's as if they all live in a 50s world full of white picket fences and smiling, trustworthy neighbors who would never dream of taking advantage. No wonder Don the Con had such an easy time fooling Francis Q. Gullible (also known simply as the typical GOP voter).

(4,047 posts)The part that should stick out to anyone who pays attention about the forwarded paragraph...

Astute readers and even casual observers of current events know that AOL has not been a major player in internet or business circles for 15 years...
THIS is the major difference between uniformed voters (typically a MAGA zealot) and informed voters (typically independents and left leaning) - the ability/inability to separate the truth from fiction.
Just my $0.02 worth.

(82,849 posts)When he gets onto something bogus that he thinks is real and is urging everyone far and wide to take action about some non-existent offer or outrage, a mild response along the lines of, "Hmmm, I don't know Ray; this reminds me of the Microsoft e-mail beta test." You don't have to be mocking or judgmental, just a gentle reminder that there is a lot of misinformation floating around out there, and to be careful about tidbits that sound too good to be true.

(1,216 posts)People vote pocket books, and the US economy is 12-15 months away from taking a dump.
Many reasons for my prediction, but the most important being the exploding budget deficits
Due to the tax cut, 85% of which was a gift for the top 1%. US Treasuries are now under
Pressure, inflation is accelerating (you can see at grocery stores already) and interest rates
Will keep going up from here. 4 more rate hikes are in the works by FED through 2019.

(1,216 posts)Even the strongest bull markets eventually end and become bear markets or pig markets.
Dow has gone up almost straight up since 2009 and tripled.
That amounts to 18% gain/year for 9 years.
Now it must go back down to keep average gain over 20 years at 7.5% per year.
Duppers
(28,117 posts)But don't you think the tariff war has had some effect? Too early to tell?
quartz007
(1,216 posts)Tariffs are charged to foreign corporations exporting stuff to United States. In theory it has no immediate effect on earnings of American corporations.
However if there is retaliation by exporting countries, that will raise cost of buying stuff to American consumers, and also to companies which use raw material such as steel. Inflation will go higher due to tariffs.
But there is a counter effect here as well, which is more steel would be made by American companies which means more jobs in US.
As for the stock market, it is overvalued, and just looking for excuses to sell off. Market has increased lot more than increase in earnings.
Duppers
(28,117 posts)And yes, I know how tariffs work. The Market often reacts emotionally to news.

Here's who I think TRump's base is, spot on:
Who is Donald Trump's base? Why is he popular? Why are people voting for him? Why do people like and support him?
