They took a generation of kids from Indian homes

Sent them to boarding schools to lose their culture under the guise of "helping care for send educate them".

This sounds remarkably like one of the current excuses that taking children from their families isn't so bad because they're being taken care of and given some schooling.

Words fail me, I am so outraged.

were savages but they would make them learn white man ways and many spent thier entire childhood to adulthood away from thier family and tribe . The tribes could not get them out.

Kill the Indian Save the Man
Col. Richard Pratt's speech in 1892:

"A great general has said that the only good Indian is a dead one, and that high sanction of his destruction has been an enormous factor in promoting Indian massacres. In a sense, I agree with the sentiment, but only in this: that all the Indian there is in the race should be dead. Kill the Indian in him, and save the man."

Btw the gov. paid religious groups to run some of these jail schools just like some of the groups that are paid for running detentions

They also adopted them into white families, sometimes expressly with encouragement for assimilation.

I have three native siblings - one removed from his home under circumstances in which he would never have been removed from a white family (alcoholic mom, but benign rather than active neglect - he was fed, clothed, and had friendly adults in his life; the other two probably would have been removed (entire family abandoned). At least with the first, one of the "selling points" was that he would be able to assimilate.

My parents believed they were taking in chlidren who needed homes (rather than bring extra children into the world). They did their best to ensure that all of us were exposed to some native culture - but it isn't the same asi being raised in it, among people you've known since birth. Two, especially, but all three at leat to a minor extent, have lingering emotional issues becuase of their early chlidhood (including separation from their parents) - between 5 and 6 decades later.

have relatives who were taken forcibly to the white schools. They were forced to wear white people clothes amd given haircuts and were punished if they spoke in their own language. Everything about them was attempted to be erased.

were adopted by Christian people several years ago. It was the in thing to do in their group. I guess they stopped at Christian when approving them because one child died of hypothermia when the religious discipline called for the child to be forced outside in the winter. The ignorants thought she was an evil child.

I am afraid these children are now in the hands of private contractors who work under the guise of being Christian.
